We are looking for a Staff Mechanical Engineer, Sustaining Engineering to join our team in one of today's most exciting technologies. This role will be based in San Jose, CA. This is a fully on-site, in-office role 5 days a week.
In this role, you will support the sustainment and continuous improvement of Bloom Energy products throughout their lifecycle. You will work across mechanical systems including enclosures, plumbing assemblies, structural frames, ventilation systems, electrical-mechanical integration, and site-level equipment. The role focuses on improving product reliability, manufacturability, cost, supplier flexibility, and overall product performance through engineering analysis, design improvements, testing, and cross-functional collaboration.
The ideal candidate possesses strong mechanical design skills, hands-on engineering experience, and a proactive approach to problem solving. They are organized, detail-oriented, capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously, and comfortable working across a variety of sustainment and product improvement activities.
Role and Responsibilities
- Support investigation of field, manufacturing, supplier, and test-related issues through structured engineering problem-solving methods.
- Support root cause analysis and 8D problem-solving efforts by owning assigned investigations, corrective actions, validation testing, and implementation activities.
- Develop and implement mechanical design improvements focused on quality, reliability, manufacturability, serviceability, and performance.
- Drive cost reduction initiatives through design optimization, material substitutions, component standardization, and manufacturing improvements.
- Identify, evaluate, and qualify second-source suppliers and components to improve supply chain resiliency and reduce sourcing risks.
- Support Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) initiatives to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
- Create and modify 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings in SolidWorks.
- Generate and maintain engineering documentation, engineering change orders, part releases, and BOM updates.
- Apply GD&T principles to component and assembly drawings.
- Support sustainment of enclosure systems, ventilation systems, structural assemblies, plumbing systems, and mechanical component integration.
- Coordinate and execute testing activities to validate design changes, alternate-source components, corrective actions, and product improvements.
- Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Reliability, Supply Chain, Service, and Product Development teams to implement engineering solutions.
- Support supplier interactions related to technical issues, component qualification, manufacturability improvements, and cost reduction opportunities.
- Manage multiple concurrent engineering projects and sustainment activities while meeting project schedules and business objectives.
- Participate in review and disposition of engineering changes and configuration management activities.
Skills and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline.
- 5+ years of mechanical engineering experience in sustaining engineering, product development, manufacturing engineering, or related fields.
- Experience with root cause analysis and corrective action implementation.
- Familiarity with 8D methodology and structured problem-solving approaches.
- Proficiency with 3D CAD software, preferably SolidWorks.
- Experience creating and modifying engineering drawings with GD&T.

- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and drive assignments to completion.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with industrial equipment, energy systems, process equipment, or complex electromechanical products.
- Experience with plumbing systems including tubing, valves, fittings, manifolds, and fluid routing.
- Experience with enclosure systems, environmental sealing, doors, ventilation systems, and outdoor equipment.
- Experience with sheet metal fabrication, weldments, structural assemblies, and associated manufacturing processes.
- Experience supporting mechanical testing and validation activities.
- Experience with supplier qualification, alternate-source development, and component validation.
- Familiarity with DFM, DFA, DFMEA, PFMEA, and reliability engineering principles.
- Hands-on experience troubleshooting mechanical systems and assemblies.
