We are seeking a Science, Math, and Integrated STEM Education Specialist to join our Office of Teaching, Learning & Assessment team at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE). This is a permanent position represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
This position follows a hybrid work model. Onsite presence will be required when business or operational needs are best supported in person, such as collaboration, training, or work that requires access to onsite resources. This position requires occasional statewide travel to schools, districts, Educational Service Districts (ESDs), conferences, and partner meetings to provide technical assistance, professional learning, and partner engagement. A driver’s license, an acceptable driving record, a personal vehicle, or an alternative means of transportation are required for this position. This position typically works a standard Monday through Friday schedule. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required.
Employees approved to work remotely must have a reliable and secure internet connection and maintain a professional work environment that supports productivity. While working remotely, employees are expected to maintain the same level of performance, responsiveness, communication, and availability as they would in the office.
What you will do!
You will lead research, development and implementation of statewide academic content standards and High-Quality Instructional Materials (HQIM) in science. This position provides technical assistance and professional learning (this includes curriculum-based professional learning) to local education agencies and educators to support the consistent use of equitable and rigorous instructional practices aligned with HQIM. The position also provides collaboration between science, math, and integrated STEM education leaders within Education Service Districts (ESDs), districts, state, national organizations, and with community partners to identify and elevate best practices around culturally sustaining instruction that drive instructional improvement and equitable student outcomes within Oregon’s education system.
Typical duties include:
- Developing and maintaining science academic content standards and assessment practices for science, as well as High-Quality Instructional Materials for science, math, and integrated STEM education.
- Providing technical support and training to educators, administrators, and other Local Education Agency (LEA) staff on implementation requirements pertaining to the area of science academic content standards and best science instructional practices.
- Building partnerships to leverage available resources, including federal funding, for expanding school-wide and district-wide capacity to improve instruction in the area of science, mathematics, and STEM education.
- Supporting the implementation of ODE's strategic plan. This also includes tracking most recent research and best practice around HQIM implementation and incorporating and contributing to HQIM communication with internal and external partners.

Minimum Qualifications (Required)
Master's degree in Education or related field from an accredited college or university and five years of education experience in the specialty area under recruitment (e.g., classroom teacher, counselor, itinerant service provider), two years of which includes leadership experience (e.g., lead teacher, program coordinator or director, school administrator) in the specialty area under recruitment.
A Doctorate in Education or related field from an accredited university may substitute for two years of the education experience, but not for the two years of leadership experience.
An Oregon Standard Administrative License (issued by Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission) may substitute for the two years of leadership experience.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge (Desired Attributes)
- Science Education Leadership and Standards Implementation: Demonstrated experience leading or supporting the development, implementation, or evaluation of K-12 science education initiatives, including academic content standards, instructional frameworks, assessment systems, or improvement efforts designed to promote equitable access to high-quality science learning for all students.
- High-Quality Instructional Materials and Curriculum-Based Professional Science Development: Demonstrated experience selecting, implementing, evaluating, and supporting the use of HQIM and curriculum-based professional learning aligned to academic standards and equitable instructional practices in science education.
- Strong Facilitation, Partnership Development and Engagement Skills: Proven ability to design and lead impactful meetings, professional learning, advisory groups, and/or collaborative processes that bring diverse partners together, elevate perspectives, and strengthen shared decision-making that supports consistent and equitable implementation of science, mathematics, STEM education, career-connected learning, and/or interdisciplinary instructional initiatives across districts, ESDs and statewide partners.
- Project Management and Program Coordination: Demonstrated experience managing complex projects or educational initiatives involving multiple colleagues/partners, competing priorities, timelines, deliverables, and implementation activities, including monitoring progress, coordinating resources, and supporting continuous improvement efforts.
- Experience with Policy Development, Review, and Implementation: Experience interpreting and shaping local, state, and/or federal education policy; supporting rulemaking or legislative processes; and translating policy into clear guidance, systems, and practices that are actionable for educators and aligned with standards and science, math and/or integrated learning implementation.
- Demonstrated Ability to Apply an Equity-Centered, Human-Focused Approach: Experience creating and/or modifying a state or local policy, program, or technical assistance approach based on equity analysis, community input, or disparate impact considerations.
