Job Purpose
The HGV Mechanic is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, and repair of HGV vehicles, ensuring fleet safety, reliability, and compliance with legal and company standards.
This role is hands-on and technical, supporting the smooth operation of the fleet and minimising vehicle downtime.
Duties and Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance & Repair
- Carry out inspections, diagnostics, servicing, and repairs on HGV vehicles
- Maintain engines, brakes, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems
- Perform scheduled maintenance in line with manufacturer and company standards
- Identify and rectify faults efficiently to minimise vehicle downtime
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure all work complies with RSA regulations, road safety standards, and company policies
- Complete safety and compliance checks on vehicles
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, MOTs, and service logs
Workshop Support
- Assist with vehicle recovery, towing, and roadside repairs if required
- Work collaboratively with other workshop staff and fleet managers
- Maintain workshop equipment, tools, and a clean, safe working environment
Reporting & Documentation
- Report vehicle defects, incidents, or recurring faults to Maintenance Manager
- Complete all service sheets, repair records, and diagnostic reports accurately
Continuous Improvement
- Suggest process improvements for fleet reliability, efficiency, and safety
- Stay updated with HGV maintenance practices and emerging technology
Knowledge, skills and experience required
Essential
- NVQ / City & Guilds or equivalent in Heavy Vehicle Maintenance
- Proven experience as an HGV / LGV mechanic
- Strong knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems
- Ability to diagnose faults using diagnostic tools and software
- Knowledge of transport compliance and safety regulations
Desirable
- Experience with multiple vehicle makes and fleet vehicles
- Ability to perform MOTs or other compliance inspections
- Welding, fabrication, or body repair experience
