Design Manager

Overview

You lead a multidisciplinary design pod and, more importantly, the system that lets it scale. Your day is less about chasing the next campaign concept and more about building the machine that produces on-brand work at volume. You might start by refining the master Figma files, tokens, and component libraries that everything else is built from, then review a set of templates so designers, and increasingly non-designers, can execute deliverables without breaking the brand. You spend time on the operational backbone: intake, prioritization, versioning, file architecture, and naming conventions, and you look for the manual steps that automation or better tooling could remove. Alongside that, you mentor senior and mid-level designers, protect quality and consistency, manage vendors and freelancers, and report cycle-time and consistency gains to senior leadership. You are equally at home in a design file, a component library, and a work-management tool. 

How You’ll Make an Impact:

• Build and govern Bio-Rad's design system: the master files, tokens, styles, and reusable components that every deliverable is built from, keeping the brand consistent as it scales. 
• Turn one-off deliverables into flexible, modular templates and kits that let designers and non-designers self-serve without compromising brand or scientific accuracy. 
• Own the operational engine (intake, prioritization, versioning, file architecture, naming conventions, and quality control) and drive measurable improvements in cycle time and consistency. 
• Bring deep tooling and automation expertise, wiring Adobe Creative Cloud, Figma, AI platforms, and work-management tools together to remove manual steps and multiply the team's capacity. 
• Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary pod, translate strategy into design roadmaps and resourcing, and influence tooling, budget, and vendor decisions, reporting progress and risk to senior leadership.  

What You Bring: 

• Education: BA/BS in Design, Advertising, Marketing, or a related field.
• Work Experience: 8-10 years of multidisciplinary design experience, with 2-3 years leading teams, ideally in a B2B or regulated environment. 
• Demonstrated success building and governing design systems and component libraries at scale, with a portfolio that shows systems and templatization work, not just campaign output. 
• Advanced command of Figma (variables, components, shared libraries) and Adobe Creative Cloud, plus expert knowledge of print production and file prep for press. AI platforms and tooling integration a major plus. 
• Strong operational rigor: fluency with work-management tools and a track record of optimizing workflows, standardizing files, and using automation to scale output. 
• A systems-minded, optimization-first way of working and the ability to influence cross-functional decision-makers.

Location: This position must be based in Hercules, CA and requires the employee to be located within commuting distance of the office.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $121,200 to $166,700 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
