What you'll do...

The Director, Electrical Engineering and Design is responsible for providing strategic leadership and technical oversight for electrical engineering and lighting design across Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Supply Chain facilities. This role leads the development and implementation of enterprise engineering standards, design strategies, and technical requirements supporting new construction, remodels, renovations, and existing facility infrastructure.

The Director leads a team of engineering professionals and provides strategic oversight of an external engineering collective responsible for supporting electrical engineering and design activities across the enterprise. This position ensures that engineering solutions are safe, reliable, cost-effective, constructible, maintainable, and aligned with operational and long-term business objectives.

This role requires a strong combination of technical expertise, organizational leadership, strategic planning, engineering design oversight, external partner management, and cross-functional collaboration.


Key Responsibilities

Enterprise Electrical Engineering and Design Leadership

  • Establish and lead the enterprise strategy for electrical engineering and design across Walmart, Sam’s Club, and Supply Chain facilities.
  • Provide technical leadership and oversight for electrical infrastructure and system design, including utility services, electrical distribution, emergency and standby power, lighting, lighting controls, and related facility electrical systems.
  • Develop and maintain engineering design requirements that balance safety, reliability, constructability, operational performance, maintainability, and total cost of ownership.
  • Ensure electrical engineering and design solutions support business objectives, operational requirements, and long-term facility infrastructure strategies.
  • Provide strategic direction and technical guidance for complex engineering challenges impacting new construction, remodels, renovations, and existing facilities.
  • Identify opportunities to improve engineering efficiency, design consistency, system performance, and overall project execution.

Electrical and Lighting Design Standards

  • Lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of enterprise electrical engineering and lighting design standards, specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Establish consistent design approaches that support construction efficiency, operational reliability, energy performance, and lifecycle cost optimization.
  • Provide technical oversight for interior and exterior lighting design, ensuring alignment with safety, customer and associate experience, operational needs, and energy efficiency objectives.
  • Evaluate emerging electrical and lighting technologies, equipment, and design practices for potential enterprise implementation.
  • Establish processes for reviewing and approving engineering design deviations, alternative solutions, and significant technical decisions.
  • Ensure engineering standards and design practices align with applicable codes, regulations, industry standards, and company requirements.
  • Incorporate field performance, lessons learned, and stakeholder feedback into ongoing improvements to engineering standards and design practices.

Engineering Team Leadership and Development

  • Lead, develop, and mentor a team of electrical engineering professionals responsible for enterprise engineering standards, technical oversight, and design support.
  • Establish clear team priorities, performance expectations, and accountability aligned with organizational objectives.
  • Develop engineering talent and technical capabilities through coaching, mentoring, professional development, and knowledge sharing.
  • Foster a culture of technical excellence, innovation, collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure effective allocation of internal engineering resources to support strategic initiatives, technical reviews, and project requirements.
  • Build organizational capabilities that support evolving business needs, emerging technologies, and long-term engineering strategies.

External Engineering Collective Oversight

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the external engineering collective supporting electrical engineering and design activities across the enterprise.
  • Establish clear technical expectations, design deliverables, roles, responsibilities, and performance requirements for external engineering partners.
  • Develop and maintain an effective operating model between internal engineering teams and the external engineering collective to support consistent, scalable, and efficient design execution.
  • Establish engineering review, quality assurance, and technical governance processes to ensure designs meet enterprise standards and project requirements.
  • Monitor engineering collective performance against established expectations for design quality, schedule, responsiveness, cost, and technical accuracy.
  • Lead collaboration and issue resolution between external engineering partners and internal stakeholders to address design challenges and improve execution.
  • Partner with sourcing, procurement, and other business teams to support engineering services strategy, resource planning, and partner performance management.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes, design coordination, and overall collective performance.

Engineering Design and Project Oversight

  • Provide technical and strategic oversight for electrical engineering and lighting design supporting enterprise capital projects and facility initiatives.
  • Partner with Architecture, Construction, Project Management, Facilities, and Operations teams to ensure electrical and lighting designs are coordinated with broader project requirements.
  • Establish design review processes appropriate to project complexity, technical risk, and business impact.
  • Support resolution of complex engineering issues, design conflicts, and field conditions requiring enterprise-level technical guidance.
  • Identify recurring design and construction challenges and implement systemic improvements to engineering standards, processes, and execution.
  • Ensure engineering decisions consider project cost, schedule, constructability, operational impact, and long-term maintenance requirements.
  • Drive accountability for engineering quality and consistency across internal teams and external design partners.

Strategic Planning, Innovation, and Continuous Improvement

  • Develop long-term engineering strategies that support evolving facility needs, business priorities, and infrastructure requirements.
  • Identify and evaluate opportunities to improve electrical system reliability, energy efficiency, operational performance, and lifecycle cost.
  • Lead the evaluation of new electrical and lighting technologies and develop recommendations for enterprise adoption.
  • Leverage project performance, operational feedback, and engineering data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support strategic initiatives involving electrical infrastructure, energy management, resiliency, and facility modernization.
  • Develop business cases and recommendations for engineering investments, design improvements, and technology implementation.
  • Establish performance metrics to evaluate engineering effectiveness, design quality, standards compliance, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Cross-Functional Collaboration and Stakeholder Leadership

  • Serve as the primary enterprise leader for electrical engineering and design strategy, standards, and technical direction.
  • Build strong partnerships with Architecture, Construction, Facilities, Operations, Energy, Safety, Procurement, and other stakeholder organizations.
  • Lead cross-functional discussions to align engineering solutions with business priorities, project requirements, and operational needs.
  • Communicate complex engineering issues, risks, opportunities, and recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including senior leadership.
  • Influence enterprise decisions involving electrical infrastructure, design standards, engineering investments, and long-term facility strategies.
  • Ensure effective communication and alignment between internal engineering resources, external engineering partners, and project execution teams.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Extensive progressive experience in electrical engineering, electrical system design, engineering management, or related technical fields.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and developing engineering professionals or technical teams.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical power distribution systems, lighting design, lighting controls, and commercial or industrial electrical infrastructure.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and governing engineering design standards, specifications, and technical requirements.
  • Demonstrated experience managing external engineering consultants, design firms, or engineering service providers.
  • Experience supporting large-scale construction, remodel, renovation, or facility infrastructure programs.
  • Strong understanding of applicable electrical codes and industry standards, including NFPA 70 and other relevant engineering requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex initiatives, manage competing priorities, and influence cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Strong communication, strategic planning, problem-solving, and leadership skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Advanced degree in Engineering, Engineering Management, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
  • Experience leading electrical engineering and design across a large, geographically distributed portfolio of retail, commercial, industrial, or distribution facilities.
  • Experience managing a large engineering collective or network of external engineering partners.
  • Experience with enterprise electrical infrastructure planning, lighting design strategies, and engineering standardization.
  • Experience implementing new technologies, improving engineering processes, and driving organizational change.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance technical engineering requirements with financial, operational, and business objectives.

Leadership Expectations

The Director, Electrical Engineering and Design is expected to provide enterprise-level leadership that extends beyond individual projects and technical engineering decisions. This position is accountable for establishing engineering direction, maintaining design standards, developing internal engineering talent, and ensuring the external engineering collective delivers consistent, high-quality engineering solutions.

The Director must balance immediate project execution needs with long-term engineering strategy, ensuring that electrical and lighting design decisions support safety, operational reliability, cost efficiency, and future business requirements.

Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, effective people leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to influence decisions across multiple business organizations while fostering a culture of engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
