This Position is ONLY Open to Montgomery County Government Employees:   

  1. Current Montgomery County Government employees; 
  2. Montgomery County employees who were affected by a reduction-in-force and currently have RIF priority rights; 
  3. Active Montgomery County local fire and rescue department volunteers with at least 50 points under the length of service award program (LOSAP); or 
  4. Active Project SEARCH Interns or former Montgomery County Government Customized Employment Public Interns, or Project SEARCH Interns within 24 months of completion of internship.

Please note: The salary range above represents the earning potential for this position. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $64,614 to $110,418, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.


WHO WE ARE


The mission of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is to move people and connect places with seamless, equitable transportation options that are safe, environmentally responsible, and support economic growth and vibrancy in Montgomery County. The Department has five divisions: Highway Services, Parking Management, Transit Services, Traffic Engineering and Operations, and Transportation Engineering. We are a large organization with over 1,200 employees and a dedicated County budget of $300 million.


The Division of Transit Services coordinates transit services in Montgomery County. Transit fulfills an essential mobility mission for the County, connecting people, communities, workplaces, educational institutions, recreational opportunities, and many other destinations. The Division employs 850+ people and operates nearly 400 buses on 80+ fixed routes throughout Montgomery County. The Division plans, schedules, and manages the County's Ride On bus system, consisting of County-owned and operated buses. Ride On carries roughly 18 million riders annually.



WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR


The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT), Transit Services Division, is seeking Transit Coordinators to help oversee and support the County’s public transit bus operations. These positions are responsible for monitoring, coordinating, directing, and reporting on a portion of Ride On service, including taking short-term corrective actions to ensure safe, timely, and efficient transit service across a large area of Montgomery County.

The ideal candidate communicates clearly and effectively both verbally and in writing to provide direction to Bus Operators and deliver excellent customer service to the riding public. They possess strong knowledge of Ride On operating procedures, County geography, routes, and transit communications and dispatch systems. This candidate maintains a consistent focus on safety while responding to accidents, incidents, disruptive passengers, and challenging road or weather conditions. They apply strong problem-solving skills to quickly assess service disruptions and implement immediate corrective actions that keep service on track. Additionally, they bring a positive attitude, collaborate with staff at all levels, and provide confident leadership in both road and desk coordinator roles.


The ideal candidate MUST have a valid Commercial Driver’s License.

The Transit Coordinator plays a critical role in advancing MCDOT/Transit Services’ mission by applying strong organizational skills, effective problem-solving, detailed report writing, and a consistent focus on maintaining adequate service coverage. This role provides essential frontline operational support to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient bus service across the Ride On network, with an emphasis on safety, customer service, and coordinated operations. In this capacity, the Transit Coordinator oversees a fleet of more than 285 buses traveling across hundreds of miles, monitoring service at key points along each route to help ensure safe, on-time performance through clear communication and excellent customer service.


Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assign buses to Bus Operators daily and deploy relief or stand-by Operators to cover open runs caused by absences, tardiness, or other issues, ensuring full coverage of all scheduled service.
  • Work closely with Bus Operators to receive and act on reports involving vehicle condition, breakdowns, crashes, traffic delays, road hazards, and other factors affecting timely service delivery. 
  • Investigate and document vehicle crashes, passenger or pedestrian injuries, disruptive patrons, adverse road conditions, obstructions, and other hazards; respond to unplanned situations requiring unscheduled bus movements, including emergencies. 
  • Intervene in customer–operator disputes and provide direct, one-on-one assistance to riders on buses, at crash scenes, bus stops, terminals, pick-up/drop-off locations, and layover points, modeling outstanding customer service.
  • Conduct on-site crash and personal injury investigations; prepare clear, detailed reports and provide testimony as needed for internal reviews or legal proceedings.
  • Operate a transit bus under unusual or emergency circumstances to maintain service coverage, including driving vehicles designated as “out of service” when required. 
  • Use radio and digital tools (computers, laptops, tablets) to maintain real-time communication with Central Communications, complete reports, perform Wi-Fi checks, enter data, produce absence and overtime reports, and receive instructions for programmed transportation services.
  • Monitor Bus Operator performance in the field and at sign-in, ensuring compliance with safety rules, customer service expectations, route and schedule adherence, and uniform standards; document both infractions and commendable actions.
  • Support Bus Operator training and coaching by providing route familiarization, guidance on safe operating practices, and feedback on service performance to reinforce a strong safety- and customer-focused culture.
  • Coordinate with Central Communications, maintenance personnel, and emergency services to remove unsafe vehicles from service, arrange change-offs, implement detours, and restore normal operations safely and efficiently.
  • Participate in special or programmed transportation services by providing maps and directions and ensuring service is delivered safely, on time, and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Additional Information:

Essential: The individual selected for this position will be considered an “Essential Employee.” Essential employees must report to work during a period of general emergency or liberal leave. The individual selected is REQUIRED to work overtime during inclement weather situations and emergencies, which may include overnight stays.

Medical Protocol:  Candidates selected for this position are required to participate in a pre-employment medical evaluation, including a physical examination and drug screening.

Work Schedule: The candidate must be able to work rotating shifts on weekdays and weekends.

Offsite Work: The candidate must be able to work off-site.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience as a Transit Bus Operator.


Education: Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Certificate of completion recognized in the State of Maryland.


Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.


License: At appointment/placement in the class, a Transit Coordinator must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with Passenger and Air Brake Endorsements from the incumbent's state of residence in order to drive a Transit Bus during emergencies and for training and demonstrations, the license must be maintained.


Other: Applicants must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age on the first day of employment in this job class.

  • Ability to prepare clear, detailed, and accurate reports, particularly those related to incidents, safety events, or service disruptions.
  • Ability to use common software applications, including Microsoft Office, and demonstrate technical proficiency with operational tools and transit-related systems.
