The North Carolina Department of Revenue is recruiting for a Bankruptcy Specialist (Administrative Specialist I). The Bankruptcy Specialist serves an essential role in the Bankruptcy Unit that is charged with the task of protecting the state's interests in collecting tax obligations from taxpayers who have filed bankruptcy under federal bankruptcy laws. This position works in a hybrid capacity and is required to work at the Raleigh Headquarters multiple times a week.

The position quickly and thoroughly processes all bankruptcy notices received by the Bankruptcy Unit. The Bankruptcy Specialist also processes payments received. The position makes technical determinations based upon established procedures.

The Bankruptcy Specialist accesses taxpayer account information, enters information into a computerized tax system, and adheres to Departmental rules and regulations as well as Federal bankruptcy requirements. The position answers telephone calls and responds to taxpayers, listening carefully to the taxpayer to ensure the taxpayer's question is properly addressed, referring the caller to the appropriate Unit and Departmental staff for assistance. Bankruptcy Specialists are required to quickly learn and understand the U.S. Bankruptcy Code and a variety of tax schedules (e.g., corporate income and franchise, individual income, motor fuels, sales and use, scrap tire, white goods, and withholding tax schedules).

Priorities within the work unit change frequently depending on immediate needs of the Department. The position has the responsibility of preventing any disclosure of tax information to an unauthorized person.
