Position Overview:The Lead Mechanic, Public Markets, provides hands-on field support, maintenance oversight, and operational coordination across NYCEDC’s public markets. This role is responsible for day-to-day building operations, overseeing contracted maintenance and janitorial services, coordinating pest control activities, managing cleaning supply inventories, supporting markets maintenance, and assisting with event and market setup. The Lead Mechanic will work closely with contracted vendors, field staff, portfolio management, design and construction teams, and Public Markets leadership to ensure market facilities remain safe, clean, operational, and well-maintained. This role requires flexibility in workdays and hours, including availability for nights, weekends, emergencies, and weather-related responses and will report to the AVP, Public Markets Operations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Supervision of Contracted Vendors:
- Assist with the oversight of on-site contracted janitorial, maintenance, security, pest control, and repair vendors; coordinate with contractors and field staff to ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contract requirements.
- Monitor vendor performance, escalate service issues when standards are not met and support strategies and corrective actions to help keep the public markets clean, functional, and pest-free.
Supervise and Monitor:
- Supervise mechanics and general field staff; ensure daily cleaning of entrances, interior doors, storage areas, hallways, lobbies, lounges, corridors, stairways, and restrooms, and verify bathroom supplies are replenished to standard.
- Ensure janitorial staff utilize appropriate cleaning supplies, materials, liquids and other agents. Support maintenance needs including painting, cleaning floors and walls, replacing light bulbs, and performing minor repairs.
- Ensure building systems and public areas are safe, operable, and maintained to expected standards.
Supervise Rubbish collection & Special Cleaning
- Supervise the trash collection process and transport waste to disposal areas as needed.
- Coordinate cleaning, priming, and painting of building interior and exterior walls; ensure the building façade free of graffiti.
- Supervise all deep cleanings for market and outside windows in accordance with vendor’s contract requirements.
Cleaning Supplies Inventory and Ordering:
- Ensure all markets are stocked with necessary cleaning supplies; track usage and maintain inventory levels.
- Coordinate ongoing maintenance and repairs with contractors and mechanics to perform maintenance and repairs of building systems as required.
Emergency and Weather Response:
- Respond to facility emergencies as required; available and responsive 24/7 for after-hours, weekend, and severe weather responses including snow and ice events; support operational decision-making as issues arise.
Site Inspections:
- Conduct weekly site inspections and report findings; supervise the cleaning and regular checking of all lighting fixtures and replace light bulbs as needed.
Supervise Special Market Set Ups:
- Coordinate and oversee market setup with field staff for special events and programming, including cleaning and preparation of event spaces.
Safety Data Sheet Management:
- Maintain and coordinate the SDS for maintenance & tenants annually at each market.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 4+ years of related experience in maintenance and upkeep of commercial and/or residential properties
- Demonstrated knowledge of building systems, fire and building codes, refrigeration systems, and snow removal procedures
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 preferred; candidates must be willing and able to obtain OSHA certification within 90 days of hire
- Effective communicator with the ability to coordinate with vendors, contractors, staff, and management
- Proficient in Microsoft Office and Outlook; familiarity with two-way radio and iPhone operation
- Demonstrated knowledge of cleaning equipment, tools, chemical handling, and safe disposal methods
- Ability to lift, carry, and move objects and equipment
- Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with minimal supervision
- Valid driver’s license required
- 24 hour on-call response required
- New York City residence within 180 days of hire
