OVERVIEW:
As a Liquor Tax Examiner with the Bureau of Alcoholic Beverages and Lottery Operations (BABLO), you will play an important role in the regulation of Maine’s beverage alcohol industry. You will be part of a collaborative team responsible for conducting audits, assisting businesses with compliance and more. You will go to work every day knowing that you are an important part of a team that keeps the people of Maine safe.
This is intermediate-level regulatory work that offers opportunities for limited remote work, professional development, and career advancement both within the Bureau and across Maine State Government.
BABLO provides training for new employees, so direct experience in liquor regulation or tax examination is not required. Our employees’ success is important to us- that's why we make sure new hires feel supported when mastering a task before moving on to the next one.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:
- Review, compare, and validate excise tax reports and supporting financial records submitted by wholesalers and Certificate of Approval holders of malt liquor and wine.
- Conduct audits of invoices, reports, and other financial and regulatory records.
- Issuing approvals or denials of alcoholic beverage label registrations and related regulatory filings.
- Reconciling funds and accounts, processing refunds, and collecting non-sufficient payments.
- Correspond with and provide professional customer service to industry members to ensure compliance with applicable laws, rules, and best practices.
- Review advertisements and promotions.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of accounting and record keeping procedures.
- Knowledge of State liquor laws, rules, and regulations governing the licensing and inspection of regulated parties.
- Knowledge of the methods of controlling the sale of alcoholic beverages through licensing and inspection activities.
- Ability to plan and assign the work of others.
- Ability to interpret and explain provisions of laws, rules, and regulations.
- Ability to write clear and concise reports.
- Ability to perform audits.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience in accounting or auditing. Demonstrated aptitude to learn and use critical thinking skills.
