The Director, Quality Engineering is responsible for defining and leading Berkley’s enterprise Quality Engineering strategy, building a center of excellence, and driving high standards of quality across technology and business organizations. This role provides executive leadership for quality practices, test automation, vendor governance, and talent development to ensure consistent delivery excellence.

 

Quality Strategy & Leadership

• Define and execute Berkley’s Quality Engineering vision, strategy, and multi-year roadmap.• Establish enterprise-wide quality standards, practices, and governance frameworks.• Build and mature a Quality Engineering Center of Excellence (CoE).• Serve as the executive leader and advocate for quality across technology and business organizations.• Influence delivery organizations to embed quality ownership throughout the development lifecycle.

 

Quality Engineering Practice Development

• Design and implement Berkley’s future-state Quality Engineering operating model.• Define quality engineering processes, methodologies, standards, and best practices.• Establish test strategy frameworks for functional, integration, end-to-end, performance, operational readiness, and user acceptance testing.• Develop quality metrics and executive dashboards to measure delivery effectiveness and product quality.• Create repeatable quality patterns that can be leveraged across programs and operating units.

 

Test Automation & Innovation

• Define and lead Berkley’s enterprise automation strategy.• Establish automation frameworks, tooling standards, and quality engineering platforms.• Drive increased automation coverage and efficiency across the software delivery lifecycle.• Evaluate and implement emerging technologies, including AI-enabled testing solutions.• Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort and accelerate release readiness.

 

Vendor Leadership & Delivery Governance

• Provide strategic oversight of quality engineering vendors and testing partners.• Establish vendor accountability, performance measures, and service expectations.• Ensure quality standards are consistently applied across all delivery partners.• Lead knowledge-transfer and capability-building initiatives to reduce long-term external dependency.• Optimize blended onshore/offshore delivery models to maximize value and scalability.

 

Talent & Organizational Development

• Establish Berkley’s Quality Engineering profession and career framework.• Define role structures, competencies, skills progression, and development pathways.• Recruit, mentor, and develop high-performing quality engineering talent.• Build succession plans and future leadership pipelines for the discipline.• Foster a culture of continuous learning, innovation, and engineering excellence.

 

Delivery Quality & Risk Management

• Partner with program and engineering leaders to ensure delivery quality objectives are achieved.• Implement enterprise quality gates and release readiness standards.• Lead defect prevention and root-cause analysis activities.• Identify and mitigate quality risks across strategic initiatives.• Drive continuous improvement through lessons learned and quality analytics.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

 

• 10+ years of progressive experience in Quality Engineering, Software Testing, or Engineering Leadership roles.• 5+ years leading enterprise-scale Quality Engineering organizations or practices.• Proven experience building or transforming Quality Engineering capabilities.• Experience leading quality teams across complex technology transformation programs.• Demonstrated success developing and executing enterprise quality strategies.• Experience managing large vendor and partner relationships.• Strong executive communication and stakeholder management skills.

 

Preferred Experience:

• Insurance or financial services industry experience.• Experience supporting Guidewire or large core system modernization initiatives.• Experience implementing enterprise test automation frameworks.• Experience establishing Quality Engineering Centers of Excellence.• Experience with Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, and modern software delivery practices.• Experience leveraging AI and intelligent automation within testing and quality disciplines.

The company offers a competitive compensation plan and robust benefits package for full-time regular employees which for this role includes: Base Salary Range: $127,050.00 $181,500.00 $235,950.00 The actual salary for this position will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate; and other conditions of employment. Benefits: Health, Dental, Vision, Life, Disability, Wellness, Paid Time Off, 401(k) and Profit-Sharing plans.
