About the Role
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic performs highly skilled mechanical work involving the inspection, maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of heavy equipment, heavy trucks, and specialized municipal equipment. This position independently diagnoses and repairs complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, HVAC, fuel, brake, and powertrain systems to ensure the safe and reliable operation of Town assets.

Work includes preventative maintenance, advanced troubleshooting, component replacement, equipment overhauls, welding and fabrication, and the use of computerized diagnostic equipment. Employees exercise considerable independent judgment in identifying equipment malfunctions and determining appropriate repair methods.

Unlike Automotive Mechanics, this position focuses primarily on heavy-duty diesel-powered vehicles and equipment and requires advanced technical knowledge and proficiency in modern diagnostic and repair techniques. Work is performed under regular supervision and is evaluated based on the quality of repairs, operational reliability of equipment, adherence to safety standards, and overall productivity.

Equipment Maintenance and Repair

  • Performs preventative maintenance, servicing, diagnostics, and repairs on heavy trucks, construction equipment, and specialized municipal equipment.
  • Inspects, troubleshoots, diagnoses, and repairs gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Changes and mounts tires.
  • Diagnoses and repairs hydraulic, electrical, pneumatic, HVAC, fuel, brake, steering, suspension, driveline, transmission, and emission systems.
  • Repairs and overhauls heavy equipment including excavators, loaders, bulldozers, graders, trenchers, cranes, pumps, compressors, and related equipment.
  • Removes, rebuilds, and replaces major components including engines, transmissions, hydraulic pumps, differentials, and related assemblies.
  • Performs advanced electrical diagnostics utilizing scanners, testing equipment, and manufacturer-specific diagnostic software.
  • Conducts North Carolina Safety and Emissions Inspections as required.
  • Tests repaired equipment to verify proper operation and performance.
  • Performs welding and light fabrication associated with equipment repairs.
  • Inspects equipment for worn, damaged, or defective parts and recommends replacement or repair.

Diagnostic and Technical Services

  • Utilizes computerized diagnostic equipment, scanners, gauges, meters, and testing devices to identify equipment malfunctions.
  • Reads and interprets technical manuals, schematics, wiring diagrams, hydraulic diagrams, and repair specifications.
  • Troubleshoots complex mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical failures.
  • Maintains accurate repair records, maintenance logs, and preventative maintenance documentation.

Shop Operations and Safety

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Operates shop tools, machinery, and equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Adheres to all departmental safety policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
  • Assists with emergency repairs and equipment breakdowns as needed.
  • Performs related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of directly related experience in heavy equipment and heavy truck maintenance and repair

OR

  • Associate degree in Diesel Technology, Heavy Equipment Technology, or Automotive Technology
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of directly related experience

OR

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the position.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Driver’s License.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class A or B Commercial Driver's License preferred but not required.
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Safety and Emissions Inspection Certification.
  • Possession of a valid brake inspection certification or the ability to obtain one within one year of hire.
  • Possession of valid manufacturer certifications and/or heavy truck certifications.
  • Possession of a valid EVT Certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain additional certifications, licenses, and specialized training as required by the department and assigned duties.
