The Senior Metallurgical Engineer serves as the subject matter expert for metallic materials selection and characterization, corrosion evaluation, and metallurgical performance improvement across the Completions and Well Intervention product portfolio, including fishing and intervention tools. This role provides technical leadership supporting product development, sustaining engineering, manufacturing, operations, quality, supply chain, and customer-facing activities.
The successful candidate will possess deep expertise in oilfield metallurgy, materials selection, corrosion mitigation, and industry standards governing downhole equipment. The role requires strong collaboration across functions and includes mentoring and technical leadership of junior metallurgical engineers through a dotted-line structure. The Senior Metallurgical Engineer will also serve as the primary metallurgical interface for internal business partners, suppliers, and customers.

As a Senior Metallurgical Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Serving as the lead metallurgical and corrosion engineering resource for completions, well intervention, and fishing tool product lines.
- Providing technical guidance on material selection, heat treatment, manufacturing processes, welding, coatings, and corrosion mitigation methods for downhole applications.
- Supporting Engineering, Operations, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, Strategic Sourcing, and Product Line Management with metallurgical expertise.
- Leading metallurgical evaluations of product performance, field failures, manufacturing issues, and supplier quality concerns. Develop corrective and preventive actions as required.
- Conducting or oversee failure investigations and root cause analyses, including metallographic examination, fractography, corrosion assessment, and mechanical property evaluation.
- Developing, maintaining, and approving metallic material specifications and engineering standards for metallic materials and associated manufacturing processes including but not limited to surface treatment and heat treatment.
- Ensuring compliance with applicable industry standards, customer specifications, and internal requirements.
- Acting as the primary technical contact for metallurgical discussions with customers, industry organizations, third-party laboratories, and certification agencies.
- Partnering with Operations and Supply Chain teams to evaluate metallic material suppliers by participating in supplier audits as an SME. Developing material qualification testing specifications and standards, to qualify alternate sources. Resolving material-related issues in Operations and Supply Chain.
- Supporting new product development programs through material selection, risk assessment, qualification testing, and design reviews.
- Providing technical leadership and mentoring to junior metallurgists and engineers through coaching, training, and reviewing technical work products. Developing technical training materials, tools and techniques and providing internal technical training by utilizing metallurgical engineering and material science fundamentals.
- Participating in customer meetings, technical reviews, failure investigations, and industry committees as required.
- Supporting strategic technology initiatives related to material performance, corrosion resistance, reliability, and lifecycle improvement.
To be successful in this role you will:
- Have a bachelor’s degree in metallurgical engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Corrosion and Protection, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Have a minimum of 10 years of experience in metallurgy, corrosion engineering, or materials engineering within the oil and gas industry.
- Demonstrate experience supporting downhole completions, well intervention, production, fishing, drilling, or related oilfield equipment.
- Possess strong knowledge of metallic materials commonly used in oilfield applications, including carbon steels, low-alloy steels, stainless steels, nickel-based alloys, and other corrosion-resistant alloys (CRAs).
- Have experience in performing metallurgical failure analysis and developing improvement guidance.
- Demonstrate strong analytical, communication, and technical report-writing skills.
- Show proven ability to work independently and lead cross-functional technical initiatives.
- Possess the ability to effectively communicate with engineers, manufacturing personnel, suppliers, and customers at all organizational levels.
Desired Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, Corrosion Engineering, or related discipline.
- Industry certifications or specialized training in corrosion, failure analysis, welding, or materials engineering.
- Extensive knowledge of:
- API 5CT
- API 6A
- API 5CRA
- API 6ACRA
- API 20 series standards
- AMPP/NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156
- AMPP corrosion testing methodologies
- Relevant ASTM and ASME standards
- Experience with sour service materials selection and qualification.
- Experience with corrosion testing and environmental cracking evaluations, including SSC, SCC, HISC, hydrogen embrittlement, DCB, SSRT, and related methodologies.
- Familiarity with welding procedure qualification, heat treatment processes, coating/plating processes, and manufacturing controls for pressure-containing equipment.
- Experience supporting customer technical reviews, audits, and qualification programs.
- Working knowledge of metallurgical laboratory techniques, including optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, hardness testing, mechanical testing, and corrosion evaluation methods.
- Ability to influence technical decisions and drive consensus across global, cross-functional teams.
- Recognized subject matter expertise in oilfield metallurgy and corrosion engineering.
Leadership Expectations

- Serves as the discipline focal point for metallurgy and corrosion within the business.
