We are recruiting a practical, innovative and strategic Associate Director, Epidemiology Operations, Planning and Strategy for the MedTech Epidemiology & Real World Data Science group. The role reports to the Vice President of the group. The position is a hybrid with 3 days in the office required, be located in New Brunswick, NJ, Spring House, PA or Cambridge, MA.
Purpose: The position is responsible for Operations, Planning and Strategy for the MedTech Epidemiology team, as outlined below. The role conducts strategic planning and corporate development initiatives, partnering closely with cross-functional team members for both internal and external industry intelligence, to build people, process, and systems capabilities.
The MedTech Epidemiology and Real-World Data Sciences organization in J&J is an authority in developing and using capabilities in real world evidence for medical devices for the following goals: 1) evidence for market access and adoption of innovative medical technologies, 2) safety assessments to protect patients from avoidable harms, 3) regulatory approvals and label expansions, 4) assisting clinical development in developing new technologies globally, 5) business development and 6) advancing RWD innovation and methodological excellence, adoption of AI, and exploring emerging data sources improve patient benefits!
We specialize in innovating in developing strategic solutions to address meaningful research questions, evaluating and developing new data sources to meet gaps in RWD, employing the AI and machine learning for RWE studies. We partner with several regulatory agencies to advance the use of RWE for medical devices, including the US FDA, Chinese NMPA, EU notified bodies, Japanese PMDA, and Australian TGA. We also are active in public-private partnerships to enhance and shape the use of RWE for medical devices, including the Medical Device Innovation Consortium, the National Evaluation System for health Technology, several Innovative Health Initiative consortia (GREG and IDHERA), and MDEpiNet. Our team publishes 20 to 35 peer-reviewed journal publications per year that are meaningful to improving surgical outcomes.
This position is an exciting opportunity to work in a collegial and dynamic group that is conducting groundbreaking RWE on the use of medical technology to improve health.
Formulate the high-level implementation and milestones tracking of the departmental strategic planning goals and objectives, collaborating with relevant business and functional leaders to oversee global stakeholder communications and bridge the strategy to successful business execution. Ensures all departmental procedures and protocols are in full compliance with state and federal regulatory, safety, and quality assurance requirements. Integrates Johnson & Johnson’s Credo and Leadership Imperatives into team goals and decision making.
MedTech Epidemiology Leadership Team Meetings: Organize the agenda items, the time allotment per item, clarify decisions to be made per agenda item, keep minutes and follow up on action items for MedTech Epidemiology Leadership team meetings
Strategic Priority Workgroup Coordination: The MedTech Epidemiology team is part of the enterprise-wide Global Epidemiology Organization, which has 5 strategic priorities: AI, Enterprise Data Licensing, Partnerships, Benefit-Risk and RWE Readiness. The candidate will coordinate the workgroup initiatives.
Strategic Planning: Work with the VP and leadership team of MedTech Epidemiology to develop annual goals and objectives for the team and develop end-of-year summaries of achievements and performance indicators, including calculating return-on-investment measures for completed projects by the team
Develop Strategies and Slide Decks for Summary Reports: For Senior Leadership, Business Unit Partners and for Newsletters:
External Operational Management and Strategy: Organize the operations, planning and contracting of complex data partnerships with external data partners for real world evidence studies (eg, robotic and digital surgery, regulatory approval or post-approval commitment or EU MDR studies)
Internal Operational Management and Planning: Represent the MedTech Epidemiology team in interactions with J&J Finance, Procurement, Law, Healthcare Compliance, Human Resources and business unit Finance teams and operations leads
Internal Partnership Strengthening: Collaborate with the Medical Safety, Clinical Operations, Medical Affairs, Quality and Regulatory groups on studies, data base purchases and contractors; cross charge expenses as approved and needed
Public-Private Partnership Coordination: Coordinate the collaborations of the J&J MedTech Epidemiology group in public-private partnerships for real world evidence for medical devices, including the National Evaluation System for health Technology (NEST), the European Union’s Innovative Health Initiative, and emerging public-private partnerships with Japanese and Chinese regulatory authorities.
AI Practice Planning and Implementation: Conduct strategic planning and operations for aspects of the MedTech Community for AI and Data Science; Work with the VP and leadership team of MedTech Epidemiology to enhance and implement an AI adoption and leadership plan
Qualifications/Requirements
Education:
A Bachelor's degree or equivalent is preferred.
A Master’s degree in management, public health, healthcare, finance or administration is preferred
Experience and Skills:
Required:
Experience coordinating teams and leading financial budgets
At least 5 years of similar experience
Experience planning programs and preparing strategic reports for upper management
Experience developing team targets, tracking collaborations and accomplishments, and ensuring timelines and targets are met
Strong writing skills and report writing experience
Skills in budget spreadsheet tracking and financial communication
Partner with SLT and department to execute culture and engagement activities.
Prior experience in project management, planning experience and strategy preferred
Preferred:
Experience in operations management, planning, project management, or similar function
A Project Management Institute (PMI) certification (e.g. PMP, CAPM)
Experience organizing research projects or finance in pharmaceutical or medical device sectors
Other:

This position is eligible to participate in the Company’s long-term incentive program. The salary range for this position is 122K-245K
Subject to the terms of their respective policies and date of hire, employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:
Vacation –120 hours per calendar year
Sick time - 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Colorado –48 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington –56 hours per calendar year
Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays –13 days per calendar year
Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
Parental Leave – 480 hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child
Bereavement Leave – 240 hours for an immediate family member: 40 hours for an extended family member per calendar year
