What’s the role
Finance Advisors are the face of Finance for finance delivery based on value and risk. They are responsible for the delivery of Finance capability required to support a set of clearly defined business outcomes for the business.
Shell MDS (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (SMDS) is an incorporated JV company with Shell as the majority shareholder, along with Petronas, Sarawak State Government and Mitsubishi Corporation as the minority shareholders. The company owns and operates the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis Plant in Bintulu, the world's first commercial plant of its kind. The SMDS plant converts natural gas into Middle Distillates (gasoil, kerosene, naphtha) and specialty products such as Detergent Feedstocks, Solvent Feedstocks, and various grades of Waxes. The plant began operations in May 1993.
What you’ll be doing
This role will work on a variety of activities in line with Value and Risk, primarily in the areas of license to operate, upholding performance standards in line with Shell performance framework, business performance management, external stakeholder management, and driving decision quality in projects and commercial. Detailed responsibilities include:
- Deliver the full suite of Finance support including leveraging on specialized subject matter experts in tax and treasury, autonomously and collaboratively with wider finance and business leads.
- Independently ensure that a proper functioning control framework is in place and that risks are properly understood, reflected and managed.
- Independently ensure value and risks are made transparent and understood in both decision- making and in performance management.
- Drive fit for purpose performance management with the business to ensure delivery of business objectives. Activities include business performance appraisal and latest estimates.
- Maximize use of Finance Operations in delivery of processes. In activities where FO and Finance Advisors act together to deliver, lead/initiate structural improvement projects and leave the accountability for delivery with the right accountable processes in FO.
- Brings new insights and proposals of high value activities to the Finance Manager who decides on the resource allocation. For example (in initiating digitalization projects and acting as a connector between Finance Operations and the business)
- Actively look for opportunities to reduce non-value adding Finance activity (“demand management”)
- Delivery of CI projects, specifically the digitalization agenda in finance.
- The role will play a key role in building a OneFinance community and in capability building of Natural Working Team.
- This role will be part of the pool of finance advisors within Shell Malaysia Upstream assets and the finance advisor will be required to work on activities and projects in other assets within SMU.
- Work directly with senior SMDS and Upstream Malaysia business leaders, representing finance with the business and playing the independent role in decision making effectively.
- Acts across organizational boundaries as required in the specific activity (e.g. across Finance for an opportunity across Upstream Malaysia/ GTL asset).
- Leverage the combined finance capability across the Natural Working Teams, especially working closely with the Finance Operations providing direct support as befitting. Interact and manage relationship with external stakeholders such as non-Shell shareholders, tax authorities and customs, external auditors, and other regulators.
What you bring
- At least 7-10 years of relevant working experience
- Strong finance professional with demonstrated operated asset experience, and a proven track record in business performance management, value management, and risk management.
- Highly skilled in core finance competencies of Accounting & Reporting and Governance, Risk and Assurance.
- Demonstrated experience in delivering cost transparency and driving cost conscious decisions / mindset.
- Ability to gain the confidence of various internal and external parties building on strong knowledge and understanding of the business drivers, value and risk.
- Maturity and authority to decide when to involve Center of Expertise and effectively plan the independent finance role.
- Problem solving mindset with the courage to ensure professional financial rigor is applied to commercial decision-making process and risk management bringing analytics and insights to the table.
- Ability to rapidly understand the specific business or function context for which activities in the pool are linked.
Additional Information:
Hiring is Subject to Sarawak State Regulatory Compliance (Work Permit Application/Approval) as the position is based out of Bintulu.
Flexible Working Arrangements:
Finance is committed to supporting flexible working arrangements where feasible. At present, flexible working arrangements per asset norms are in place with 3 days' work from office (Bintulu) and 2 days' work from home. Exceptions to flexible work arrangements are business need dependent (e.g. during plant turnaround)
