Position Summary
The Ocean Systems group is seeking a hands-on robotics engineer with an interest in developing marine systems, from initial concepts through prototype demonstrations and product commercialization.
Triton Systems Ocean Systems group develops underwater vehicles (UUVs), surface vehicles (USVs), and their subsystems. Additionally, the Ocean Systems group develops systems for submarines, autonomous anchor systems for the defense, energy, and commercial sectors. Being innovative and providing technical problem-solving within a multidisciplinary team of researchers will be a major part of your work life.
Responsibilities:
- Develop software architecture and implement software solutions based on technical requirements
- Write software to interface with hardware and enable autonomous or semi-autonomous system behaviors
- Implement an intuitive user interface that ensures reliable remote operation of underwater actuated systems
- Produce reliable, maintainable, and testable code
- Interpret datasheets and product specifications to compare and select control system components
- Design and troubleshoot control circuits and support system-level integration
- Integrate and test sensors and drivers for robotic subsystems
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to achieve design goals
- Contribute to technical proposals and solution development for customer needs
- Present technical progress and results to internal teams and customers, including non-technical audiences
- Operate the system during at-sea tests and demonstrations
- Travel as needed
- Job location is split between Chelmsford, MA and Londonderry, NH
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline (advanced degrees are a plus)
- 2+ years of relevant industry experience (candidates with up to ~10 years of experience will be considered)
- Experience with Python programming
- Experience implementing PID and feedback-based control loops
- Knowledge of control systems, digital circuits, and power distribution
- Ability to develop software that interfaces with hardware systems
- Hands-on aptitude with basic mechanical and electrical assemblies for prototyping and testing
- Comfortable using basic hand tools in a lab or prototype environment
- Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Collaborative mindset and commitment to project success
Desired Qualifications:
- Direct experience with control systems, automation, or robotics applications
- Direct experience with controlling solenoid operated valves
- Direct experience with proportional control hydraulic systems
- Direct experience with selecting and protecting sensors for marine applications
- Familiarity with systems engineering principles and structured development processes
- Experience with motor control, sensing systems, and behavior architectures (e.g., finite state machines, behavior trees)
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols and TCP/IP networking
- Ability to interpret or work with PFD and P&ID drawings
- Experience developing software for remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) or heavy machinery
The Ocean Systems group does operate around, in and on the ocean, year-round and in foul weather. Willingness to go and work at-sea for the day (or a couple of days) is expected. Firsthand knowledge of working in this environment is desired.
