The City of Jacksonville is looking for an experienced and dependable Sanitation Worker III to join our Solid Waste team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced sanitation professional who is ready to take on greater responsibility, serve as a backup driver, and provide day-to-day guidance to other members of the team.

As a Sanitation Worker III, you will perform a variety of intermediate unskilled and skilled work supporting the City's refuse and recycling collection operations. Responsibilities include the collection of refuse, recyclables, appliances, yard waste, and bulky waste, as well as operating collection equipment and serving as a backup driver when needed.

This position plays an important role in keeping our community clean, safe, and well-maintained. The Sanitation Worker III also provides limited supervision and guidance to Sanitation Worker I and II employees, making this a great opportunity for someone looking to grow their leadership skills while continuing to work in the field.

Collecting municipal solid waste; pushing and pulling carts; lifting and dumping garbage cans and containers; directing traffic; serving as backup driver. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed.   • Collects residential refuse, recyclable materials, yard waste, construction materials, appliances, tires, motor oils and bulky waste items such as furniture.
  • Cleans area around collection containers and collection truck during route collection.
  • Operates cart lift mechanism to dump collection carts.
  • Operates packer blade mechanism to compress refuse.
  • Directs traffic and guides truck operations in congested areas of the collection route.
  • Disseminates information to the general public concerning basic collection route.
  • Cleans and washes refuse collection equipment.
  • Assembles and cleans refuse collection containers.
  • Assists in the delivery of trucks to residential customers for the Dial-A-Truck Program.
  • Supervises sanitation workers when assigned to performing collection service on route or doing special pickup collection.
  • Acts as Crew Leader, when given assignment to drive collection route.
  • Performs both pre-trip and post trip inspections and completes report forms for pre-trip and post trip inspections.
  • Keeps abreast of the changes in solid waste collection policies, OSHA and ANSI standards.
  • Transports municipal solid waste to disposal sites on a daily basis.
  • Performs related tasks as required.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to completion of high school diploma. 
Three years of experience in solid waste collection.
6 months of supervisory experience.

Special Requirement
Possession of a Class B commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.

General knowledge of the operation and servicing of automotive equipment; general knowledge of traffic laws and regulations; ability to perform continuous heavy manual work at a steady pace in adverse weather conditions; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; dependability; ability to operate sanitation equipment in a safe manner; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.
