About the Company
Our client is an enterprise organization with a growing infrastructure footprint, currently running its virtualization environment on VMware. As part of a broader IT modernization strategy, the organization is evaluating a transition from VMware to Microsoft Hyper-V and is seeking expert guidance to assess feasibility, risks, and the right path forward before committing to execution.
About the Role
We are looking for a highly experienced Staff Virtualization Engineer to lead a one-month infrastructure assessment for a client planning a migration from VMware to Microsoft Hyper-V. This engagement focuses on analyzing the client's existing virtualization environment, identifying migration considerations and risks, and delivering a clear, actionable roadmap for a potential future migration.
This is an assessment and planning engagement only. The selected candidate will not be responsible for executing the migration during this initial project.
Responsibilities
- Assess the client's existing VMware virtualization environment, including hosts, clusters, virtual machines, storage, networking, and related infrastructure.
- Review the current VMware architecture and identify key technical dependencies and constraints.
- Evaluate the environment's readiness for migration to Microsoft Hyper-V.
- Identify workloads that may require special consideration during migration.
- Analyze infrastructure, capacity, performance, availability, and configuration requirements.
- Identify potential technical risks, compatibility issues, and migration challenges.
- Evaluate target-state considerations for a Hyper-V environment.
- Develop recommendations for migration sequencing, prioritization, and approach.
- Collaborate with client technical stakeholders to gather information and validate findings.
- Document the current-state environment and key findings.
- Produce a detailed migration assessment and roadmap that the client can use for future implementation.
- Clearly communicate technical findings and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Requirements
- 7+ years of experience working with enterprise virtualization environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with VMware vSphere/ESXi environments.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Hyper-V and Microsoft virtualization technologies.
- Experience assessing or planning virtualization migrations, preferably VMware-to-Hyper-V migrations.
- Strong understanding of servers, storage, networking, virtual machines, and enterprise infrastructure.
- Experience with infrastructure discovery, dependency analysis, and technical assessments.
- Ability to identify migration risks and translate technical findings into actionable recommendations.
- Strong documentation and technical writing skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Ability to work independently and lead an assessment with limited supervision.
Nice to Have
- Prior experience leading full-scale VMware-to-Hyper-V migration projects (not just assessments).
- Experience working with enterprise clients in consulting or advisory capacities.
Engagement
- Project duration: 1–2 months
- Scope: Environment analysis, assessment, and migration roadmap
- Migration execution: Not included in the initial engagement
- Compensation: Competitive, paid in USD
- Potential: Follow-on work may be available based on the client's needs and project outcome.
