Job Description Summary:

The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator RN will actively participate in the ongoing monitoring of trauma patients, from pre-hospital through discharge with the purpose of facilitating continuity and appropriateness of care, as well as improvement of processes. Interacts with patients and families to facilitate communication with the Trauma Care Team on trauma care issues and discharge planning. Responsible for data collection and analysis through concurrent monitoring and chart abstraction processes. Monitors trauma care rendered, identifies problems and trends, and delivers recommendations, projects, and action plans to improve processes. Ensures compliance with Trauma Performance Improvements and Patient Safety Program and prepares and presents to the Trauma Committee.

Job Requirements, Prerequisites and Essential Functions:

Job Specifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science – Nursing (BSN) required

  • Master of Science – Nursing (MSN) preferred

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of Emergency/Critical Care/Trauma experience required

  • Minimum of 1 year of performance improvement experience preferred

License and Certifications:

California RN license (RN) required at hire.

Emergency Nurse - Pediatric Care (ENPC) required within 180 days of hire.

Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) required within 180 days of hire.

Integrative Agitation Management (IAMTAC) required within 30 days of hire. 

Prerequisite Skills:

  • Must have a good working knowledge, ability to communicate and educate: The California Nurse Practice Act, The Joint Commission rules and regulations (TJC), Nursing Quality Indicators, Evidence Based Best Practices and Nursing Documentation and the American College of Surgeons Orange Book.

  • Ability to positively engage and educate in one-on-one and group presentation setting, and create effective educational materials and competencies using various resources and computer applications.

  • Demonstrated experience exercising initiative, creativity, resourcefulness, and flexibility in the education of hospital staff related to the objectives and strategic plans for the hospital.

  • Ability to research, interpret, and analyze data from hospital specific applications, and produce solutions to improve processes. Advanced skills required for data reporting and data modeling utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications and other data management software.

  • Ability to carry out and present research projects as needed.

  • Ability to handle stress, and effectively work with physicians, management, and patient care staff in support of special projects and auditing.

  • Must have strong leadership skills, be compassionate, and have excellent bedside skills.

  • A working knowledge, and able to educate on, electronic medical record nursing documentation.

Employees in this position have access to protected health information. The protected health information a person in this position can access includes demographics, date of service, insurance/billing, medical record summary information, and all other information that may be contained in patient records. This position requires patient health information to perform the functions outlined as part of this position description.

Duties And Responsibilities:

Essential (Not Modifiable) for Research

Specific

  • Independently identifies problems related to patient care or trauma systems and reports them to the trauma program and manager. Participates in a collaborative approach for problem resolution.

  • Conducts and/or coordinates post-trauma resuscitation critiques in collaboration with the trauma program manager, when feasible, to evaluate the delivery of care and identify barriers to the delivery of efficient trauma care. Provides staff with follow-up on identified concerns and problems.

  • Participates in multi-disciplinary case reviews.

  • Attends the Hospital-wide Performance Improvement Committee and reports out on projects.

  • Attends the trauma performance improvement committee.

  • Attends all meetings related to trauma.

  • In collaboration with the trauma team, identifies all trauma patients presenting to the Emergency Department, admitted for in-patient care, transfers in, transfers out, and trauma related deaths on a daily basis.

  • Develops review criteria and performs concurrent and/or retrospective chart reviews and abstractions of patients with a traumatic diagnosis or other designated diagnosis.

  • Conducts concurrent review of trauma patients by reviewing charts for medical necessity of procedures of procedures and/or appropriate treatment prescribed, to identify potential medical and nursing issues for patient care and report the problems to the trauma program manager.

  • Refers PI issues and concerning chart reviews to the trauma program manager and trauma medical director for review and peer evaluation

  • Performs concurrent and retrospective review of patient records with the trauma program manager and analyzes data utilizing established criteria for trauma indicators. Identifies trends, profiles and patterns.

  • Assists in the development and maintenance of standards, policies and procedures, protocols, performance improvement activities and evaluation of the effectiveness of action plans as required for the Trauma Program.

  • Participates in the TQIP program and meetings.

  • Participates in the county and regional meetings as needed.

Secondary (modifiable)

  • Attends appropriate training seminars and conferences to maintain current knowledge of the field.

Compensation:

The posted pay range complies with applicable law and reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this role. Individual pay is set by skills, experience, qualifications, and internal/market equity, consistent with MarinHealth’s compensation philosophy. Positions covered by collective bargaining agreements are governed by those agreements.
