Description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We’re working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration heavy-lift launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to Earth’s orbit and beyond. Engineered with a reusable first stage and a seven-meter payload fairing, New Glenn is building the road to space.

We are looking for a design engineer with experience in flight vehicle fluid systems to act as a Cognizant Engineer (CogE), supporting the development and delivery of a New Glenn upper stage.  As CogE, you will own the complete definition, design, development, cost, manufacturability, and delivery of flight hardware.  Knowledge of component design, CAD modelling, aerospace materials, sealing, bolted joints, stress analysis, drawing creation, GD&T, engineering release systems, manufacturing methods, part inspection and non-conformance management, assembly practices, and vendor management are needed.  You will be expected to collaborate with a team of cross-functional engineers and other designers to deliver fully developed and qualified designs integrated into the first launch vehicle.

A large part of the challenge in this role will be to deliver simple, low-cost designs that fully meet the functional requirements of the fluid system.

This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable spaceflight. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • You will ensure complete definition (requirements) of the components and/or system
  • You will guide or complete the design and analysis of your components and/or system
  • For in-house components, you will own the design and development.
  • For procured components, you will work with suppliers or other Blue Origin groups to identify and procure components.
  • You will lead testing and verification including development, qualification, and acceptance testing
  • You will manage the project plans including cost, schedule, and risk management to ensure timely delivery.
  • You will lead the team delivering your components, including cross-functional contributors as an integral part of the team.
  • You may mentor other designers, perform technical peer reviews, and or check drawings.

Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or related field
  • 5 years of experience in an aerospace propulsion or fluid subject area
  • Experience in 3D CAD programs (Creo preferred)
  • Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools to analyze pressurized systems and secondary structures (ANSYS preferred)
  • Experience with analysis of flow through components or systems
  • Proven understanding of aerospace materials and treatments
  • Experience in design, fabrication and testing of components for launch vehicle or ground support systems
  • Experience generating and interpreting Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
  • Knowledge of propulsion and fluid system components (i.e. valves, regulators, pressure vessels)
  • Experience with the design and development of seals
  • Experience designing and analyzing bolted joints
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and give to a culture of teamwork and inclusion
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum.

Desired:

  • 8+ years’ experience
  • Experience with launch vehicles, launch vehicle upper stages, spacecraft, or satellites
  • Experience in all phases of the product development cycle from definition through operation.
  • Experience with cryogenic fluids including liquid Oxygen and Hydrogen
  • Hardware procurement and prototyping experience
  • Advanced engineering degree
