The Energy Market Operator is an experienced professional with knowledge of and some experience with power generation dispatch principles, practices, concepts, and theories. Nature of power generation dispatch work is varied with some complexity, and usually has some precedent. Responsible for the completion of assigned processes or activities, requiring interpretation of power generation dispatch practices needed to safely and reliably operate within the MISO Energy and Operating Reserve Market. Contributes to identifying improvements to power generation dispatch activities and procedures. As business needs evolve, the Energy Market Operator will perform all tasks associated with the role as defined by the Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities

- Provide technical execution of defined activities to support the delivery of power generation dispatch initiatives required to achieve efficiency, effectiveness, and innovation objectives.
- Achieve results by autonomously owning and executing power generation dispatch activities as defined by supervisor.
- Support agile projects through application of defined power generation dispatch approaches.
- Utilize power generation dispatch standards, procedures, and processes, providing recommendations for process improvements, as necessary.
- Support the escalation of any risk to delivery for power generation dispatch, to help ensure business objectives are executed and met across responsible project areas.
- Escalate issues to supervisor, as necessary.
- Provide communication to their supervisor to provide status updates on generation dispatch activities and identify risks in delivery or resourcing needs.
- Support senior staff to provide their supervisor with technical updates to Director level management on a regular basis to proactively support business objectives.
- Scope of work is clearly articulated and activity based, may support multiple activities to enhance their discipline’s agile approach.
- Operate as the experienced technical staff within power generation dispatch to execute through defined department objectives, milestones and priorities in the short-term according to established procedures and supervisor guidance.
- Gain an understanding for profit and loss targets and operating parameters.
- Use prescribed guidelines or policies to analyze and resolves problems, solves problems in straightforward situations, analyzes possible solutions using technical experience, judgments and precedents.
Qualifications
Required Education, Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree (preferred) in Business, Accounting or related field
- 3-5+ years of related experience
- Step progression levels based on skill proficiency and scope of job.
- Strong business acumen pertaining to the Utility industry
- Strong knowledge of leading practices for their practice area
- Strong planning and project management skills
- Willingness and ability to learn new technologies on the job
- Proficient at functioning effectively within a team environment, present ideas and opinions in a respective and collegial manner
- Progression to this level is strictly restricted based on critical individual capabilities and business requirements; must be supported by market survey data.
Licenses and Certifications
- NERC Certification required within 12 months
