Description
Public Works Superintendent positions manage large and diverse units engaged in the construction and maintenance of City owned assets in public Right of Way; supervise the maintenance and repair of the City's street network which includes repair and maintenance of street pavement surfaces, sidewalks, bicycle facilities, traffic control signs, guardrail, fencing, pavement markings, striping, street lights, traffic signals, advance warning traffic control devices, maintenance of trees and graffiti and weed abatement within the public right of way.
For the Stormwater Department, Public Works Superintendents are responsible for the day-to-day operations and management of the City’s street sweeping and optimization program, storm pump stations, channel dredging, pipes/drains inspections and cleaning, in-house construction Capital Improvement Project teams, and other duties as assigned.
For the Transportation Department - Public Works Superintendent positions, manage deferred maintenance and Capital Improvement Projects; serve as subject matter expert in claim and litigation issues related to maintenance and repair; resolve resident complaints, manage human resources, responsible for overall procurement and maintenance of vehicles and equipment; assist in developing, tracking, and monitoring Division budget and performance measures; and perform other duties as assigned.
NOTES:
- Employees in job classifications represented by the Municipal Employees Association (MEA) are scheduled to receive the following general wage increases:
- 3.5% effective 7/1/27
- 2% effective 7/1/28
- 2% effective 1/1/29
- Eligible benefited employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS).
EXPERIENCE: Four years of full-time experience in the coordination of public facility or utility construction and maintenance projects, which must include four years of planning, assigning, and supervising the work of several crews of a major unit or division engaged in the construction, maintenance, and/or repair of street, water, sewer, park, public right-of-way, or public facilities. Qualifying supervisory experience MUST demonstrate responsibility for the full range of supervisory duties, including planning and scheduling employees' work, employee selection, training, evaluation, commendations, and discipline.
NOTES:
- Experience supervising/crew leading the maintenance of buildings or park grounds (e.g., mowing, weeding, planting) is NOT qualifying.
- City of San Diego employees using Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA) experience to qualify must submit written documentation signed by their appointing authority or payroll specialist, detailing the work performed, dates, and total number of qualifying OCA hours. OCA experience without the required documentation will NOT be considered.
HIGHLY DESIRABLE(S):
- Proficient in using computer software, including Word and Excel.
- Experience with Field Mobile Device Units and Work Order Management Systems
- For City of San Diego employees, proof of Out-of-Class Assignment (OCA), if utilized to meet the minimum requirements.
