Assists with planning, promoting, setting up, and executing educational, cultural, and recreational programs for patrons of all ages, as well as assisting with branch duties as needed.

Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Assists the designated programming staff with the following:

  • Regular attendance is required
  • Interprets and implements library policies and procedures for library users under the direction of the branch leads  
  • Assists designated programming staff with assigned responsibilities and provides support coverage in their absence, as directed
  • Serves as liaison, as needed, between library administration, other branches, and branch staff
  • Provides public assistance in light reference and readers’ advisory services, as well as use of collections, catalogs, electronic resources, and related services
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of system-wide programs 
  • Assists in identifying community educational and informational needs and supports the planning, execution, and evaluation of youth and general interest classes, programs, and outreach
  • Assists with developing and maintaining rapport with community organizations, including local schools, and supports library representation at community activities to promote a positive public presence
  • Implements marketing for branch programs and services
  • Assists in maintaining the collection in collaboration with designated branch leadership
  • Attends staff meetings as assigned 
  • Answers and directs telephone calls 
  • Sorts, shelves, shelf-reads, organizes, straightens, and shifts collections as needed
  • Works at the public service desk and provides customer service, as needed
  • Operates integrated library system software (ILS), including:
    • Checking materials in and out 
    • Processing material requests 
    • Handling overdue, lost and damaged item procedures
  • Must have reliable transportation 
  • Performs other duties as assigned 
  • Some evenings and weekends required

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This is not a supervisory position.

Education and Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or one to three months of related experience and/or training, OR an equivalent combination of education; Associate of Arts degree preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Maintains strict confidentiality in accordance with County and Library policies and applicable laws
  • Skill in using standard business software and equipment
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and managerial skills, with the ability to work effectively with the public 
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals 
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, library staff, county employees, and the general public
  • Communicate effectively with patrons and staff 
  • Perform various mathematical calculations accurately 
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships and foster teamwork in a diverse environment 
  • Interact professionally with the public and external organizations 
  • Exercise initiative, discretion, and decision-making within established guidelines 
  • Apply common sense to daily tasks, patron assistance, and problem-solving 
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in problem-solving 

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Valid Texas Driver's License

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit or stand for extended periods of time, walk and sit; have manual dexterity to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee must be able to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 pounds frequently and occasionally 25+ pounds. This position requires the ability to push and pull book carts weighing 25+ pounds across a distance. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.


This job takes place within a library environment and in an automobile on county roads and streets. Inside the libraries, the noise level is usually a low to medium level. The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as office meetings and training rooms. Use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire and building safety regulations, and traffic signals when driving are expected.


In an automobile, the noise level can be loud while driving on the roads and streets. Outside weather conditions may fluctuate from extremely hot (above 90 degrees) to cold (below 30 degrees). In outdoor conditions, the employee may frequently be exposed to high humidity, hot sunlight and/or rain, hazardous road conditions, and gasoline fumes; the employee may occasionally be exposed to hail, sleet, and/or snow.
