Description

[What the role is]

The Radiochemistry and Radiation Services Department (RRSD) is part of the Radiation Protection and Nuclear Science Group of the NEA, Singapore's national authority for radiation protection. RRSD conducts routine environmental radioactivity monitoring to safeguard public health and the environment. It is an IAEA Collaborating Centre - supporting international capacity-building and advancing scientific excellence in radiochemistry across the region and beyond.

[What you will be working on]

As a Senior Scientific Officer at RRSD, you will play a key role in supporting Singapore's environmental radioactivity monitoring programme, while also contributing to the laboratory's work as an IAEA Collaborating Centre. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Leading routine environmental radioactivity monitoring, including the collection, preparation, and radiochemical analysis of environmental samples such as air, water, soil, and biota
  • Developing, reviewing and validating radiochemical analytical methods and standard operating procedures to ensure accuracy, reliability, and continuous improvement of laboratory capabilities
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and instrumentation, including conducting regular calibrations and participating in equipment audits to ensure optimal performance
  • Driving the laboratory’s quality management efforts, including calibrations, equipment maintenance, and documentation in compliance with ISO 17025 standards and relevant Workplace Safety and Health (WSH) regulations
  • Leading the laboratory’s participation in international proficiency testing exercises, analysing performance outcomes and implementing corrective actions where necessary
  • Managing and updating laboratory databases, including contributing to the regional database for the sharing of environmental radioactivity data
  • Supporting the laboratory's IAEA Collaborating Centre activities, including participating in regional training programmes, workshops, and seminars as a technical resource
  • Assisting in the development of educational materials and resources to support knowledge dissemination and capacity-building efforts among IAEA member states
  • Contributing to the publication of findings and sharing of best practices to support the global radiochemistry community

[What we are looking for]

The job might be for you if you possess:

  • A Degree in Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Nuclear Science, or a related discipline
  • Hands-on laboratory experience or strong foundational knowledge in radiochemical analysis and environmental sampling techniques
  • Good understanding of laboratory quality management principles, including familiarity with ISO 17025 standards and good laboratory practices
  • Meticulous attention to detail and a systematic approach to laboratory work, with a strong commitment to data accuracy and integrity
  • Good analytical and writing skills, with the ability to prepare clear and accurate technical reports and documentation
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues, regional counterparts, and international partners
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with good judgement on when to seek guidance or alignment
  • Resilience and sound prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deliver quality outcomes under tight timelines
  • High levels of professional integrity, meticulousness, and commitment to public service outcomes
  • Relevant experience or coursework in radiochemistry, nuclear science, or environmental monitoring (advantageous), as well as prior exposure to international scientific programmes or IAEA initiatives (an added advantage)

As part of the shortlisting process for this role, you may be required to complete a medical declaration and/or undergo further assessment.

Applicants will be updated on the status of their applications within 4 weeks of the closing date of this job posting.
