Patient Care Tech (PCT) Medical Surgical Unit (M3)

As a member of the Patient Care Team, you will ensure that the patient and family members are attended to in a caring and attentive manner, responding to the needs of patients/family members in a timely manner and maintaining a professional and friendly demeanor at all times.

M3 serves as the hospital’s orthopedic center and has been recognized by Blue Cross Blue Shield as a center of distinction. The unit’s primary focus is orthopedics as we care for over one thousand total joint replacements annually. This unit also specializes in spine care, and orthopedic trauma. M3 consists of 26 private rooms and care for the aforementioned orthopedic   population, as well as adult acute care patients who have a wide variety of diagnoses and co-morbidities providing comprehensive care according to the scope of care defined by the organization and Massachusetts state regulations

Hours: 24 hours per week / Evening shift (3pm-11:30pm)

Rotating (every other) Weekend (Saturday & Sunday) & Holiday shifts required

Location: Lowell General Hospital -Main Campus M3

Minimum Qualifications: 

1. High school diploma or equivalent 

2. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification 

Preferred Qualifications: 

1. Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or equivalent.

2. Three (3) years experience in health care or nursing services.

3. Successful completion of courses in EKG and Phlebotomy. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 
The duties and responsibilities listed below are intended to describe the general nature of work and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.  Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned. 

1. Assists with any examinations, procedures, tests, treatments that have been taught through formal training which main include: Using glucometer, hoyer lift, obtaining vital signs, urinalysis, blood glucose, microalbumin, and A1C.  Takes vital signs and weights. 

2. Assists patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) in a manner which maintains patient privacy and safety.  Prepares patients for meals, assists with meals or feeds patient as necessary.  Responds to call lights in a timely manner.  Assists with ambulation and/or transfers. 

3. Provides complete hygienic care to patients which may include distributing linens, making beds, changing linens, changing briefs, bedpans, urinals, and catheters. Administers cleansing enemas. 

4. Applies principles of prevention to maintain skin integrity and skeletal muscular alignment. Changes simple dry sterile dressings.  

5. Assists self-care Ostomy patients with pouching and preventative skin care. 

6. Prepares and administers hot and cold applications including sitz bath, soaks and packs. 

7. Applies supportive appliances, i.e. slings, ace bandages, elastic stockings and binders, when appropriate. 

8. Obtains, documents and reconciles allergy and medication lists. 

Physical Requirements:  

1. Lifting up to 30-35 lbs and turning patients.  Prolonged standing and walking.  Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting. 

2. Manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation for performing procedures to operate computer keyboard 

3. Requires ability to see computer screen and reports

1. Excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with patients, visitors, and hospital personnel. 

2. The ability to work as a team member, promoting a caring and collegial attitude toward others. 

3. The ability to work under stressful conditions, adapting to the changing pace on the unit, frequent interruptions, emergencies and critically ill patients.  

4. The ability to recognize patient data relative to age specific needs and provide care as described in the department’s policies and procedures.  

5. The ability to organize and prioritize work.
