DEFINITION & SALARY
Under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor, this position assists with general administrative functions of the Recreation Department, oversees and coordinates the operations and services of assigned city-wide recreation programs, serves as liaison for facility rentals.
Minimum Monthly Salary: $3,205 Maximum Monthly Salary: $3,896
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITCS
Incumbents in this class work under general supervision and are assigned the responsibilities of over-seeing and coordinating Recreation programs, including, but not limited to youth sports, youth and adult special interest classes, aquatics, and special events and activities as needed. Note: overtime or irregular hours may be required.
RECREATION SPECIALIST 2:
DEFINITION & SALARY
Under the direction of the Recreation Director, this position is responsible for the development, planning and implementation of assigned city-wide recreation programs of average difficulty; involving supervision of support staff and to perform other related work as required.
Minimum Monthly Salary: $4,735 Maximum Monthly Salary: $5,756
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISITCS
Incumbents in this class are assigned the responsibilities of over-seeing several major divisions within the department, including, but not limited to the following: youth sports, youth and adult special interest classes, Senior Citizens and special events as needed. Note: overtime or irregular hours may be required.
RECREATION SPECIALIST I:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Education
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Two years of college or university level coursework in recreation, physical education, or related field and some experience recreation leadership and/or recreation programs.
- Possession of a valid California operator’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a responsible driving record.
- Possession of or ability to obtain a valid American Red Cross First Aid Certificate and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certificate.
Essential job functions may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Plans, organizes, and coordinates work in assigned areas of responsibilities
- Responsible for facility rental program
- Assists the Recreation Supervisor with administrative tasks
- Oversees the completion of special reports, news releases, program fliers, etc.
- Provides recommendations on class programs, special events, facility rentals and fee classifications
- Assists in the coordination and implementation of special events
- Instructs coaches and umpires, seasonal recreation employees, and sports participants on rules of play and conduct
- Requisitions materials, equipment and supplies and prepares financial reports and other office details
- Communicates recreation services to the public and participants
- May assist in training and providing general direction to part-time recreation staff and volunteers
- Perform other related duties as required
RECREATION SPECIALIST II:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience/Education
- Typical qualifying experience for this position includes a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Administration, Physical Education or closely related field and at least one year of full time supervisory experience in a recreation setting.
- Possession of a valid California operator’s license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles and a responsible driving record.
- Plans, organizes, coordinates and supervises work in assigned areas of responsibilities
- Assists in the hiring, supervising, evaluating and training of part-time personnel
- Assists the Recreation Director with administrative tasks
- Oversees the completion of special reports, new releases, program fliers, etc
- Attends various meetings relating to the department’s youth sports programs and Senior Citizen programs
- Assists in the development of the Department’s budget and implementation
- Requisitions materials, equipment and supplies and prepare financial reports and other office details
- And other related work as required
RECREATION SPECIALIST I:
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to:
- Plan, organize and implement a wide variety of recreation programs and/or activities
- Work effectively with various individuals including co-workers, coaches and players
- Prepare comprehensive reports and plans
- Operate a computer and the related software efficiently
- Understand and follow oral and written instructions
- Communication effectively both orally and in writing
- Planning, objectives, techniques and requirements of organizing youth and adult games, sports, special events, and expanded learning and enrichment programs
- Principles of composition and report writing
- Customer services principles
- Computer software programs including Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point
- Appropriate safety precautions and procedures
RECREATION SPECIALIST II:
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Ability to:
- Plan, organize and implement a wide variety of recreation programs and/or activities
- Train, direct and supervise part-time personnel
- Work effectively with various individuals including co-workers, coaches and players
- Formulate and develop individual program and departmental budgets
- Philosophy of recreation; principles and techniques of supervising, organizing and coordination of recreation programs and services
