JOB DESCRIPTION:

This is structure and craft work involving the construction and repair of structures.  Responsibilities include repairing and expanding existing buildings and performing construction work.  Work includes reading and reviewing detailed construction blueprints of large renovation projects; estimating work materials required to complete the job; planning and laying out the work to be completed; and providing functional supervision to assigned staff.  Employees in this class are distinguished by the requirement to perform work related to the construction and repair of buildings and bridges.  Work is performed under limited supervision.

REPRESENTATIVE TASKS:

  • Constructs timber concrete forms for bridge related work and foundations; finishes surfaces of structural concrete foundations and slabs; erects and uses rigging slings and staging for safe lifting of materials and equipment; erects scaffolding to create safe work platforms.
  • Constructs short to moderate height concrete, gabion, and timber retaining walls.
  • Reviews blueprints of large renovation projects involving multi floor and multi room renovation of entire building to estimate and determine materials needed to complete the job.
  • Builds partitions, installs and tapes sheetrock, installs suspended or natural ceilings, installs windows and carpeting, and performs finish work to complete renovation work.
  • Builds and installs finish carpentry work such as window casements, floor and door moldings,  counters, shelves, large, detailed signs, and other job assignments in order to complete assigned projects.
  • Plans the layout of work forms and partitions to ensure that renovation project is completed within the specifications set forth in the building plans.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of building codes and how they apply to carpentry and masonry trades.
  • Knowledge of the techniques and methods utilized in performing skilled finish carpentry work.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of various materials used in the carpentry trade.
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of various materials used in bridge form construction.
  • Knowledge in the use of equipment used in the carpentry trade.
  • Knowledge in the use of equipment used in the masonry trade.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of retaining wall construction techniques.
  • Knowledge of OSHA construction standards.
  • Ability to work safely in risk conditions.
  • Ability to work from design plans and specifications.
  • Ability to estimate materials required for project.
  • Ability to perform all types of carpentry and masonry work independently.
  • Ability to perform skilled finish carpentry work including inside specialty work such as , window casings, molding, counters, shelves and signs.
  • Ability to determine need for operational materials and to schedule and budget for future repairs.
  • Ability to determine that work performance meets work, production and safety standards.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Two (2) years experience in the general maintenance and repair of machinery, equipment, mechanical systems, and buildings.

LICENSING/REGISTRATION/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Some positions may require heating/boiler operator's license, electrician helper's license, apprentice plumber's license, and/or propane/natural gas technician license.
