BNZ's Procurement tīma plays a critical role in identifying, sourcing, negotiating, and managing third-party supplier arrangements on behalf of the bank. The Procurement Associates work closely with internal stakeholders across BNZ to deliver fit-for-purpose, best value goods and services, while supporting strong risk, compliance, and supplier outcomes.

This is a fixed-term opportunity for 18-months based in Auckland. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. Anchor days in the office are Tuesday, as well as either a Monday or Friday.

What are 5 day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

To assist with the procurement of goods or services in response to opportunities identified in the procurement workflow or in response to tactical business needs. Engage with internal stakeholders to understand business needs, requirements, risk and legal considerations, and commercial objectives. Processing contract renewals/extensions and statements of work (or equivalent) in accordance with procurement processes. Identify and deliver benefits through cost savings, cost avoidance, productivity improvements, risk mitigation, and improved service outcomes. Working to optimise the use of Coupa and drive more catalogue purchasing, self-serve by the business, and building out resources related to guided buying aligning to categories.

We are a collaborative tīma focused on being strategic partners to our internal stakeholders. We aim to deliver market leading negotiations that support our business to grow now and in the future. We do this through a category management and technology business unit engagement model, allowing you to be an expert in the area you manage while also creating opportunities for cross-collaboration and cross-skilling across other categories, business units, and subject matters within the procurement tīma.

What projects / work will the candidate be working on now and into the next year?

This tūranga will focus on assist with the procurement of goods or services in response to opportunities identified within BNZ. There will also be a requirement to embed changes to internal procurement tools and support of changes related to those tools.

I manage via a coaching-led mantra where people feel supported to learn, grow, and take ownership of their development. I focus on building capability through guidance, feedback, and opportunities to stretch, while maintaining clear expectations and accountability. I hold high standards for performance and delivery, but approach them in a way that is constructive, fair, and focused on helping individuals and the team succeed.

What is the most challenging thing about this opportunity?

The most challenging thing about this opportunity will be balancing pace, complexity, and regulatory requirements. The successful candidate will need to manage competing priorities, work through complex stakeholder and supplier requirements, and ensure procurement activity is delivered in line with BNZ's internal processes, risk expectations, and relevant regulatory obligations.

What technical skills are required for this role?

A minimum of 2 years' experience as a category manager, procurement specialist, or equivalent role negotiating third-party contracts. The role requires demonstrated knowledge and experience in sourcing, procurement and delivering supplier value, including exposure to category management, strategic sourcing, negotiation, and contracting. It will also require the ability to learn quickly and challenge assumptions.

What do we want you to know before you apply?

This is an 18-month fixed-term opportunity based in Auckland. The role is hybrid, with three days in the office and two days working flexibly. Anchor days in the office are Tuesday, as well as Monday or Friday. The successful candidate will be joining a busy, collaborative procurement tīma and will need to be comfortable working in a highly regulated environment, managing complex stakeholder relationships, and delivering at pace.

What will success look like for the candidate in this role?

Success will be demonstrated through demonstrating an ability to learn, successfully manage procurement activity that is assigned, strong engagement with stakeholders, and measurable value delivered for BNZ. This includes cost savings, cost avoidance, productivity improvements, quality and service outcomes, and strong alignment to risk, compliance, and regulatory expectations.
