The Mental Health Counselor will provide developmental and educational support to students, or other clients of the college, in the form of short-term personal counseling; provide counseling services to students in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to the Community College mission and its diverse student population. Through a comprehensive, student-centered counseling approach, to develop and present structured groups for positive growth; to develop, monitor, and provide in-service training in counseling support programs; and to do related work as required. Ability to utilize a wide range of assessment instruments for personal, career, and educational issues.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION

The Mental Health Counselor will provide developmental and educational support to students, or other clients of the college, in the form of short-term personal counseling; provide counseling services to students in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to the Community College mission and its diverse student population. Through a comprehensive, student-centered counseling approach, to develop and present structured groups for positive growth; to develop, monitor, and provide in-service training in counseling support programs; and to do related work as required. Ability to utilize a wide range of assessment instruments for personal, career, and educational issues.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Licensed Professional Counselor, Psychotherapist, or Masters Licensed Social Worker that allows for independent practice preferred PLPC or ability to obtain provisional licensure within 60 days of employment required. Experience working in collegiate and/or mental health settings. Demonstrated experience using tact and sensitivity in dealing with confidential matters. Highly motivated self-starter who can take initiative and balance preventive and intervention practice. Learner-focused leader with a deep understanding of and passion for student life and associated best practices in the context of higher education. Working knowledge of FERPA and HIPPA regulations. Ability to follow College policies and procedures. Should be committed to a culture of diversity, respect, and inclusion. General knowledge of the College’s mission, purpose, goals, and the role this position plays in achieving those goals.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Master’s degree (M.A.) or equivalent; licensure or provisional licensure required.

         

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, include the following.

Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices. 

The Mental Health Counselor plays a critical role as part of the Mental Health Services department.  The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for providing clinical mental health services. This includes providing clinical mental health counseling in the individual and group setting, the development, implementation, and evaluation of policies, procedures, and programs, as well as consulting with faculty, staff, and administration over mental health topics. The Mental Health Counselor will participate in developing proactive mental health and wellness programming for the entire college population and assist with staff training as needed.

Provide individual and group mental health counseling services to the student population, including evaluation, development, and facilitation of support groups, and making referrals to external clinicians as needed. Develop mental health programs in conjunction with the Dean of Student Services. Facilitate training and psycho-educational workshops for students, faculty, and staff. Maintain confidential clinical schedule and case files. Attend ongoing trainings as required (current updated license, etc.) Assist in the development, support, and supervision of interns, if applicable. Ability to adhere to college policies and procedures. Ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Should be committed to a culture of diversity, respect, and inclusion.
