Senior Director, Platform Engineering
Location: Dallas, TX or Akron, OH (Hybrid)
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Director, Platform Engineering will define, build, and scale the technical foundation beneath Signet Jewelers' eCommerce storefronts and the order management estate. This leader will own solution architecture, cloud platform direction, AI in the software development lifecycle, build and release pipelines, the integration platforms, environment and performance engineering, edge delivery, and security engineering across the commerce and order management portfolio.
The role supports an operating model of central standards and federated delivery by ensuring platform capabilities are built as reusable, governed, secured, production-ready services used across every brand rather than solved separately by each delivery team.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Define and own the enterprise solution architecture for commerce and order management, including current state and future state views, domain reference architectures, and one set of standards applied across all storefronts.
- Build and scale platform engineering capabilities, including reusable services, shared APIs, integration frameworks, orchestration patterns, developer tooling, templates, and production-grade components used across multiple delivery teams and brands.
- Own cloud platform direction on AWS, and own AI in the software development lifecycle, including the tooling standard, the cost per team, and the measures that show whether it is working.
- Define and mature build and release pipelines, CI/CD, DevSecOps, test automation, and the integration platform so there is one release path rather than one per team.
- Own environment management, performance engineering, edge delivery, and pre-render, including capacity, readiness, and stability through peak trading.
- Establish engineering standards, platform guardrails, reference implementations, and reusable accelerators that enable secure, scalable, interoperable, and cost-effective delivery.
- Lead security engineering as the engineering counterpart to the Information Security function, embedding policy and controls into pipelines, environments, and platform services.
- Lead a permanent team of engineers and architects, including a Director leading the architecture practice, and direct the contract architecture, DevOps, and environments capacity onshore and offshore.
- Own the partner relationships and the standards those partners work to, with a view on what is better held internally over time.
- Provide senior technical leadership to transformation programs and brand initiatives, and influence senior stakeholders by evaluating emerging technology and making transparent trade-offs across scalability, risk, performance, cost, speed, and business value.
- Partner with Information Security, Data, Enterprise Architecture, Infrastructure, and business technology leaders to embed governance, security, compliance, and cost optimization directly into engineering workflows and platform services.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
- 15 or more years of progressive technology leadership experience across software engineering, platform engineering, architecture, cloud, or enterprise technology organizations.
- 7 or more years leading large-scale engineering teams responsible for platform engineering, cloud platforms, architecture practices, or production technology capabilities.
- Proven experience building and scaling platforms, including reusable services, shared capabilities, APIs, integration frameworks, developer tooling, and production-grade systems used across multiple teams or business units.
- Hands-on experience owning environments, release pipelines, and performance engineering, not architecture and design alone.
- Experience leading architects and engineers who do not report directly to the role, with influence across teams embedded in delivery.
- Experience moving capability from a systems integrator or managed service back in house, including deciding what stays outsourced and holding the standard through the transition.
- Experience in high-volume consumer eCommerce, retail, or another business with a seasonal traffic peak and a change freeze around it.
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Preferred experience in a multi-brand or multi-storefront commerce estate operating in more than one country.
- Preferred experience with a move toward headless or composable commerce on an established platform.
Technical Skills:
- Commerce platforms: SAP Commerce (Hybris), composable and headless commerce patterns
- Front end: Angular, Spartacus, server side rendering, pre-render for crawler and agent traffic, full stack engineering
- Order management: IBM Sterling Order Management or comparable enterprise OMS
- Cloud: AWS, cloud native architecture, containers, Kubernetes
- Integration: MuleSoft, API design and management, event driven patterns
- Product and enterprise data: Informatica PIM or comparable, enterprise data platforms
- Edge and performance: Akamai or comparable CDN and WAF, caching strategy, load and performance testing
- Pipelines and automation: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, DevSecOps, test automation
- Observability: application and infrastructure monitoring, logging, tracing, service level objectives
- AI in the development lifecycle: coding assistants, agentic workflows, evaluation, run cost management
- Security engineering: secure SDLC/AI-DLC, vulnerability management, PCI DSS scope in a retail estate
Leadership Skills:
- Executive-level communication, with the ability to turn technical trade-offs into clear business decisions
- Written clarity, including architecture decision records, standards, and briefing material for senior leaders
- Vendor and contract management, including rate cards, statements of work, and partner performance
- Ability to build credibility with experienced leaders and to deliver through teams that are embedded elsewhere
Location and Travel:
- Location: Irving, Texas, or Akron, Ohio
- Travel: between the two sites, plus periodic time in stores
- Work environment: office based with hybrid flexibility. This position involves viewing a computer monitor for the majority of the working day. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
