Engine Optimisation (EO) Manager
Sydney Based – 12 Month Fixed Term Contract - Full Time - 50% office Attendance
Search • AI discovery • Organic visibility
You are a leader in Engine Optimisation – spanning GEO, AEO and SEO – helping shape how Australians discover and understand CommBank across search, AI and emerging digital discovery environments.
Our Engine Optimisation chapter within the Media Centre of Excellence is redefining organic visibility beyond traditional search. From search engines and AI-generated answers to LLMs, assistants and emerging discovery platforms, we're building the foundations that help customers find accurate, useful and trusted information about CommBank.
Through collaboration, experimentation and evidence-led optimisation, we're helping ensure CommBank remains discoverable, trusted and relevant as customer discovery behaviours evolve.
Do work that matters
The Engine Optimisation (EO) team sits within Marketing > Media and leads the strategy and evolution of organic discoverability across Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO).
As an EO Manager, you'll lead EO strategy and performance across assigned portfolios, helping ensure CommBank's digital experiences and content can be effectively discovered, understood and represented across search and AI-powered environments.
A critical part of this role is stakeholder leadership. You'll build trusted relationships across marketing, product, content, analytics, technology, media, PR and Corporate Affairs, Risk & Compliance and AI teams – aligning stakeholders around priorities, influencing decisions and helping move complex work from recommendation to implementation.
You'll combine established SEO expertise with curiosity about rapidly evolving AI-led discovery, using data and evidence to determine where we should focus, what we should test and what can scale.
See yourself in the team
This role reports to the EO Chapter Lead. As an Engine Optimisation Manager, you will:
- Lead EO strategy and optimisation across assigned portfolios, connecting GEO, AEO and SEO into a broader approach to organic discoverability.
- Act as a trusted EO partner to senior and cross-functional stakeholders, understanding business priorities and influencing teams to adopt and implement optimisation recommendations.
- Navigate competing priorities and complex approval pathways, creating alignment and momentum without relying on direct authority.
- Translate complex search, AI, technical and performance concepts into clear recommendations and narratives for technical, non-technical and senior audiences.
- Measure and improve visibility across search and AI discovery environments, including Share of Voice, citations, sources, sentiment and other emerging discovery signals.
- Champion strong technical and content foundations, including crawlability, indexation, information architecture, structured data, schema, taxonomy and machine-readable content.
- Identify opportunities to improve how CommBank products, services and information are understood and represented across search engines, LLMs and AI-powered experiences.
- Collaborate across content, PR, Corporate Affairs, social, media and partnerships to strengthen CommBank's presence across owned and relevant third-party discovery surfaces.
- Identify emerging EO opportunities and hypotheses worth testing, partnering with the EO Advanced Analyst to interpret findings and translate evidence into portfolio strategies, optimisation priorities and scalable practices.
- Help evolve EO measurement by connecting visibility signals with customer behaviour, digital performance and business outcomes where possible.
- Promote practical EO standards, guardrails and ways of working that support responsible optimisation while meeting brand, accessibility, Risk and Compliance requirements.
- Build EO capability through knowledge sharing, training and practical guidance.
- Brief, challenge and collaborate with agency and technology partners to prioritise high-value EO opportunities.
On any given week you will:
- Analyse search, AI visibility and digital performance data to identify opportunities across your portfolios.
- Develop and prioritise EO recommendations across content, technical foundations, information architecture and digital experiences.
- Build relationships across your portfolios, understand stakeholder objectives and influence the prioritisation of EO opportunities within broader business roadmaps.
- Lead conversations where priorities or perspectives differ, using evidence and clear communication to establish a practical path forward.
- Work with marketing, product, content, analytics and technology teams to implement improvements that strengthen organic discoverability.
- Partner with agency teams on EO foundations, portfolio initiatives and emerging optimisation opportunities.
- Investigate how CommBank and its products are represented across search engines, AI assistants and LLMs, including the sources and citations influencing those responses.
- Collaborate across paid, owned, earned, social and PR activity to identify opportunities to strengthen organic discovery.
- Use platforms such as BrightEdge, Google Search Console, GA4, Adobe Analytics and emerging AI visibility tools to identify trends, diagnose issues and measure performance.
- Present insights, recommendations and performance updates so stakeholders understand what matters, why it matters and what action is required.
- Share emerging insights and learnings with the wider EO team to help evolve our frameworks and ways of working.
We'd love to hear from people who have:
- Exceptional stakeholder management and influencing skills, with a demonstrated ability to build trusted relationships across senior, technical and non-technical stakeholders and drive outcomes through teams you don't directly manage.
- Strong SEO expertise, with an understanding of the technical, content and authority signals that influence organic discoverability.
- Practical familiarity with GEO, AEO, generative search and the changing ways people use AI to discover information, products and brands.
- Experience managing SEO or organic discoverability across large, complex digital properties or organisations.
- Strong understanding of technical SEO, information architecture, structured data, schema, content optimisation and measurement.
- Strong analytical skills and experience using data to diagnose performance, prioritise opportunities and make evidence-led recommendations.
- The ability to navigate ambiguity, competing priorities and differing perspectives while maintaining strong stakeholder relationships and moving work forward.
- Excellent communication skills, including the ability to simplify complex or emerging concepts and tailor recommendations to different audiences.
- Familiarity with SEO platforms, analytics tools and emerging AI/LLM visibility measurement approaches.
- The ability to translate rapidly changing search and AI developments into practical strategies and opportunities rather than chasing every new trend.
- A collaborative, curious and adaptable mindset, with a willingness to learn and help shape an evolving discipline.
- Experience in financial services, another regulated industry or a complex enterprise environment would be advantageous.
- A degree in digital marketing, communications, technology, data analytics or a related discipline is welcome, but practical experience and demonstrated capability matter most.
