Description
Infrastructure Engineer
Location: London
Contract: Full-time, permanent
Reporting to: Infrastructure Manager
Working pattern: Hybrid, with a minimum of three days in the office each week
We’re looking for an Infrastructure Engineer who enjoys getting into the detail, solving problems properly and making sure things keep working.
We’re a small team supporting a diverse portfolio of businesses. Our environments bring together established systems and newer technology, so there’s plenty of variety in the work and scope to build your experience.
You’ll be involved in designing, configuring, deploying and supporting infrastructure across those businesses. You’ll bring strong knowledge in some areas and the confidence to work across others, with colleagues around you to share expertise and tackle problems together.
What you’ll be doing
This is a hands-on role combining day-to-day support with project delivery. You’ll take responsibility for your work, keep people informed and see issues through to resolution.
Your responsibilities will include:
Keeping infrastructure running well. Support enterprise networks, servers, storage, virtualisation and cloud services across the businesses we work with.
Resolving incidents and underlying problems. Investigate issues thoroughly, take ownership in your specialist areas and help prevent repeat failures.
Delivering change. Contribute to infrastructure refreshes, upgrades, relocations, migrations and new deployments.
Working with the architecture team. Help design and implement solutions that are secure, resilient and perform as they should.
Improving the environment. Identify weaknesses, suggest practical improvements and help put them in place.
Keeping documentation useful. Maintain clear diagrams, configuration records and support guidance so colleagues can understand and support what’s been delivered.
Working to good standards. Follow change, incident and problem management processes, and help improve procedures where needed.
You’ll join an out-of-hours on-call rota, approximately one week in four. Some projects and incidents will also require work outside normal hours, and occasional travel may be needed within the UK and internationally, including Europe and the US.
What we’re looking for
You’ll have at least five years’ experience in infrastructure support or engineering, with a solid technical grounding and substantial knowledge of networking, virtualisation or centralised storage.
You’ll be someone who:
Takes ownership of problems and follows through on commitments.
Can explain technical issues clearly to colleagues with different levels of technical knowledge.
Balances operational support with project work and manages competing priorities sensibly.
Understands change, incident and problem management, with knowledge of ITIL processes.
Keeps accurate records and shares knowledge with the wider team.
Is curious about how things work and looks for ways to improve them.
Has contributed to infrastructure projects such as upgrades, refreshes, relocations or new installations.
Your technical experience
You’ll need a working understanding across the following areas, with particular depth in networking, virtualisation or storage:
Networking: Routing, switching, VLANs, subnetting, firewalls and Wi-Fi.
Virtualisation and storage: Supporting virtualised infrastructure and centralised storage platforms.
Cloud connectivity: Cloud networking principles, particularly in Azure.
SD-WAN: Knowledge of at least one SD-WAN solution.
Microsoft 365 and Exchange: Exchange Online and hybrid Exchange integrations.
Windows administration: Active Directory, Entra ID and Windows Server.
Infrastructure documentation: Creating clear diagrams and maintaining accurate technical records.
Some Linux knowledge, particularly Red Hat or Ubuntu, would also be useful.
Experience that would help
Our environments are varied, so experience with some of the following would be welcome:
Fortinet, Palo Alto, Juniper, UniFi and remote access solutions.
Enterprise networks using HPE Aruba, UniFi or Cisco Meraki.
Network protocols including BGP, OSPF and STP.
Deploying enterprise LAN, wireless and network security solutions.
Virtualisation clusters, including high availability and distributed resource scheduling.
Backup and disaster recovery platforms such as Veeam or Commvault.
Brocade Fibre Channel switching, iSCSI and HPE storage.
Physical data centre infrastructure, including UPS, cooling and fire suppression systems.
On-premises and hybrid Exchange, SQL, Oracle or Linux.
Monitoring tools and integrating network, storage and virtualisation platforms into them.
Relevant Cisco, Fortinet or Microsoft qualifications would be an advantage.
What you can expect
A varied role where you can stay hands-on, contribute to meaningful projects and develop your technical skills. You’ll work in a small team where sharing knowledge and helping each other matters.
Benefits include:
Discretionary bonus of up to 15%.
Training and development through accredited providers.
25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays, with up to five days carried over.
Pension with a 6% employer contribution and a minimum 3% employee contribution, available after three months.
Private medical insurance after three months.
Life assurance at four times your annual salary, available after six months.
Season ticket loan repayable over ten months, available from the start.
Cycle to work scheme, available after three months.
Hybrid working, with a minimum of three days in the office each week.
If you enjoy solving technical problems, improving infrastructure and being someone your colleagues can rely on, we’d like to hear from you.
