Description
We’re determined to make a difference and are proud to be an insurance company that goes well beyond coverages and policies. Working here means having every opportunity to achieve your goals – and to help others accomplish theirs, too. Join our team as we help shape the future.
The Global Specialty practice at The Hartford is seeking a Data Steward to join our Data & Analytics value stream. This role will partner closely with the existing Data Steward to support and expand our data governance capabilities and Data Modernization work. The successful candidate will help serve as a custodian of data quality, lineage, and governance practices, while also collaborating with the stakeholders including Data Science & Analytics, Actuarial, Finance and Operations to implement a cohesive data strategy.
In this role, we seek a collaborative team member who can contribute to strategic outcomes while also executing hands-on stewardship responsibilities as the function continues to grow and mature.
The ideal candidate applies strong functional knowledge to identify and clarify business data needs and ensure they are appropriately represented through data definitions, governance standards, data quality rules, and metadata throughout the data lifecycle. This individual performs data analysis, data discovery, and data profiling using industry-standard tools to understand data characteristics, validate business meaning and usage, identify data quality concerns, and promote consistency and trust in data. The Data Steward develops, maintains, and governs key data artifacts, including data dictionaries, business glossaries, lineage documentation, and mapping documents, ensuring that business definitions, data relationships, transformation rules, ownership, and governance expectations are clearly documented and consistently applied.
The candidate will act as a liaison between business and IT stakeholders, providing guidance on data governance, definitions, and standards. They will partner closely with cross-functional teams—including underwriting, operations, data engineering, and architecture—to ensure alignment on data policies, data quality expectations, and domain standards. This role will also contribute to establishing and reinforcing best practices in data governance, including working with tools such as IDMC (or similar platforms), and supporting continuous improvement in how data is defined, managed, and consumed across the organization.
Responsibilities
- Partner with existing Data Steward to define, implement, and enforce data governance practices
- Support data quality management, including identification, monitoring, and remediation of data quality issues
- Maintain and enhance data dictionaries, business glossaries, and standard data definitions
- Document and support data lineage across systems, ensuring transparency and traceability of data flows
- Collaborate with business and technical teams to ensure data is captured, stored, and used in alignment with governance policies
- Participate in the implementation and adoption of governance tools (e.g., IDMC) and processes
- Analyze and identify gaps or inconsistencies in data and recommend improvements
- Work across multiple teams and stakeholders to align on domain data standards (e.g., Claim, Policy)
- Support development and enforcement of data policies, standards, and procedures
- Contribute to governance forums and promote best practices across the organization
Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in data analysis, data governance, or business analysis within the Insurance industry or similar environment
- Experience working with data warehouses, data lakes, and/or analytics platforms
- Strong understanding of data stewardship concepts, including data quality, lineage, and governance
- Familiarity with data governance tools such as IDMC (or similar platforms)
- Experience developing and maintaining data dictionaries, glossaries, and governance artifacts
- Ability to independently investigate data issues and identify root causes
- Strong collaboration skills with experience working across multiple teams and stakeholders
- Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business audiences
- Understanding of data modeling and domain-driven design concepts (insurance preferred)
- Proficiency with querying tools (SQL preferred)
