The Supervisor, Alumni Engagement provides strategic leadership and oversight for dedicated segments of alumni (e.g. faculty, hub or specific market segments or cohorts,) and leads alumni engagement staff. The Supervisor engages and builds deep relationships with a portfolio of key alumni, donors, volunteers as well as current and future prospects, with the primary purpose to establish and strengthen the culture of affinity and engagement among uOttawa alumni, donors and strategic partners.
In this role, your responsibilities will include:
Strategic Planning and Relationship Management:
- Develops and implements short and long-term alumni and community engagement strategies for an assigned faculty, hub, market or constituent segment, in partnership with the Director, Engagement. Leads initiatives that strengthen affinity, deepen stakeholder engagement and support the University's strategic priorities
- Serves as the primary engagement advisor to assigned faculties, institutional leaders and Advancement colleagues by developing strategic and collaborative relationships and identifying opportunities to advance engagement objectives. Oversees the engagement portfolios of direct reports and provides guidance on relationship development and stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Responsible for ongoing portfolio management activities, ensuring adherence to University Advancement standards, achievement of engagement objectives, and the effective identification, cultivation and progression of strategically important alumni, donor and community relationships.
Design, Implementation and Management of Alumni and Community Engagement Programming:
- Leads the design, implementation and evaluation of alumni and engagement programs, services and initiatives that support faculty and institutional priorities. Develops project plans and engagement approaches that foster meaningful connections with alumni, donors, volunteers and community partners.
- Evaluates program effectiveness using quantitative and qualitative metrics. Monitors emerging trends, benchmarks best practices and recommends program enhancements to improve stakeholder engagement, operational effectiveness and overall impact.
Leadership and Professional Development:
- Provides guidance and support to direct reports and oversees their work by facilitating and tracking project status, identifying problems and issues, allocating appropriate resources, and ensuring that projects and events are completed on schedule and at the highest levels of quality.
- Conducts performance management activities, supports employee development and identifies training and growth opportunities. Fosters a collaborative, service-oriented and high-performing team environment.
Reporting and Budget:
- Prepares and submits regular updates and reports to the Director, Engagement , outlining engagement and pipeline activity in line with the segment’s priorities. Communicates budgetary needs to the director to support engagement programming within their segment or sector and respects the established budget. Ensures that all activities are reflected in the University’s CRM database
What you will bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, public relations, business administration or other relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- 5 years’ experience in public and/or alumni relations, or advancement
- Superior communication skills in French and English (verbal and written)
- Experience in supervision or human resources management
- Required to travel both domestically and abroad as well as work evenings and weekends. Valid driver’s license and passport required.
- Knowledge of the University of Ottawa’s mandate, mission, objectives and culture
- Strong working knowledge of advancement processes, best practices and current industry trends
- Proven ability to manage ongoing relationships with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, including senior executives and officials and influential individuals
- Self-starter, goal oriented, and strategic thinker
- Team player, excels at working collaboratively as well as independently
- Strong networking skills. Ability to use persuasion, negotiation and influencing skills to develop relationships with stakeholders
- Strong project management and organizational skills, and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
- Team management experience
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills, including public speaking, and solid relationship management skills at all levels in an organization
- Strong computer skills including above average competency in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Proficiency in Raiser’s Edge is an asset.
