About the Role
We are seeking a Full-Time Specialist Optometrist with the Professional Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or Professional Diploma in Glaucoma to deliver specialist glaucoma care alongside comprehensive optometric examinations at Eye Academy Windsor. The role combines direct patient care with clinical decision-making, multidisciplinary working and contribution to service development. The clinic mix and level of responsibility will be agreed according to qualifications, experience and the requirements of each pathway. Clinical responsibilities
- Assess and monitor patients with ocular hypertension, suspected glaucoma and established glaucoma within agreed clinical pathways and an authorised scope of practice.
- Perform and interpret glaucoma investigations, including Goldmann applanation tonometry, gonioscopy, pachymetry, optic nerve assessment, OCT and visual fields, as appropriate to the clinical presentation.
- Integrate structural and functional findings, assess risk and recognise progression, inadequate pressure control or other changes requiring senior review.
- Agree and document management and follow-up plans within the relevant pathway, with timely escalation to the Clinical Lead or ophthalmologist when required.
- For independent prescribing clinicians, initiate or adjust treatment only within prescribing competence, agreed clinical authority and service protocols.
- Provide comprehensive eye examinations, refraction, ocular health assessments and appropriate advice, management or referral for other eye conditions.
- Explain findings, treatment options, adherence and safety-netting clearly, involving patients in decisions about their care.
- Maintain accurate clinical records, correspondence and referrals, ensuring results and actions are communicated promptly.
- Work with the Clinical Lead, ophthalmologists, dispensing team and Practice Manager to support safe clinics and continuity of care.
- Participate in audit, case review, incident reporting and improvement of clinical protocols and patient pathways.
- Support colleagues through clinical discussion, teaching and mentoring within personal competence.
- Maintain professional registration, appropriate indemnity and continuing professional development; follow confidentiality, consent, safeguarding and infection prevention requirements.
- Current General Optical Council registration as an optometrist.
- Independent Prescribing qualification with current GOC prescribing registration.
- Professional Higher Certificate in Glaucoma or Professional Diploma in Glaucoma.
- Recent practical experience of assessing and monitoring patients with glaucoma, suspected glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
- Competence in glaucoma examination and investigation, including gonioscopy, optic nerve assessment, OCT and visual field interpretation.
- Sound clinical judgement, clear documentation and recognition of the limits of personal competence.
- Ability to deliver thorough general optometric care and communicate sensitively and clearly with patients.
- Ability to work effectively with clinical and practice colleagues and contribute to clinical quality improvement.
- Experience in hospital eye services or community ophthalmology pathways.
- Further qualifications or experience in medical retina, acute eye care or other relevant clinical areas.
- Experience of audit, teaching, mentoring or developing clinical services.
