Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner will provide comprehensive, hands-on care to pediatric surgical patients as an integral member of the Washington University Division of Pediatric Surgery at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.

This position combines inpatient and outpatient pediatric surgical care, with a strong emphasis on direct patient contact, procedural care, trauma follow-up, and the management of children with complex wounds and burns. The Nurse Practitioner will participate in the Pediatric Acute Wound Service (PAWS), providing evaluation, treatment, procedures, and longitudinal management for children with complex wounds, burns, and other acute wound-care needs.

The Nurse Practitioner will also staff outpatient pediatric surgery clinics and outpatient trauma clinics, including evaluation of new patients, postoperative follow-up, and ongoing management of surgical and traumatic conditions. In the inpatient setting, the Nurse Practitioner will provide coverage for acute surgical issues as they arise, assist with postoperative management, and coordinate care with the pediatric surgical team.

The successful candidate will join a well-established five-member Advanced Practice Provider team whose members bring several years of collective experience in pediatric surgical care. The APP team works closely with pediatric surgeons, fellows, residents, nurses, and multidisciplinary specialists and plays an important role in continuity of care across the inpatient and outpatient environments.

This position is particularly well suited for an APP who values direct patient interaction, procedural care, clinical responsibility, and the opportunity to care for children across a broad spectrum of general and acute pediatric surgical conditions.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities:

• Provides direct patient care to pediatric surgical patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Obtains patient histories, performs comprehensive assessments and physical examinations, orders and interprets diagnostic studies, and develops and implements patient-centered plans of care in collaboration with the pediatric surgical team.
• Evaluates and manages acute and chronic pediatric surgical conditions and provides postoperative and longitudinal follow-up.
• Participates in the Pediatric Acute Wound Service (PAWS), providing direct care to children with complex wounds, burns, skin and soft-tissue conditions, and other acute wound-care needs.
• Performs appropriate bedside and ambulatory procedures related to wound and burn management, consistent with training, certification, collaborative practice agreements, and institutional policies.
• Provides wound assessment, dressing management, procedural care, and patient and family education for children with complex wounds and burns.
• Staffs and manages outpatient pediatric surgery clinics, including new patient evaluations, postoperative visits, and follow-up of pediatric surgical conditions.
• Participates in outpatient pediatric trauma clinics, providing follow-up care for children recovering from traumatic injuries and coordinating ongoing surgical and multidisciplinary needs.
• Provides inpatient coverage for acute surgical matters as they arise, including evaluation of new clinical concerns, postoperative issues, wound-related problems, and changes in clinical status.
• Assists with inpatient postoperative management, discharge planning, care coordination, and transitions between hospital and outpatient care.
• Collaborates closely with pediatric surgeons, fellows, residents, APP colleagues, nursing staff, consultants, and ancillary providers.
• Counsels and educates patients and families regarding diagnoses, procedures, wound and burn care, postoperative recovery, complication prevention, and follow-up.
• Manages health conditions through prescriptive authority, therapeutic interventions, diagnostic evaluation, or referral to other healthcare providers and resources as appropriate.
• Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, clinical education, and program-development initiatives within the Division of Pediatric Surgery.
• Documents and bills for eligible professional services in accordance with institutional policies and the collaborative practice agreement.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

• APN licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.
• Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
• Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirement).

Preferred Qualifications:

• Pediatric clinical experience strongly preferred.
• Experience in pediatric surgery, trauma, acute care, burn care, wound care, or another surgical specialty.

• Strong clinical assessment, communication, teamwork, and care-coordination skills.

• Interest in longitudinal patient care and continuity across hospitalization, postoperative recovery, and outpatient follow-up.

Salary Range

$97,000.00 - $174,600.00 / Annually

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
