Job Description

Truckee Meadows Community College is seeking a part-time reference and instruction librarian to join our team. The part-time librarian supports the academic mission of the college by providing professional reference and research assistance to students, faculty, staff, and community patrons. The position expands access to librarian services through regular evening coverage and backup Saturday coverage while also providing dedicated support for library projects and initiatives.

 

Working approximately 10 hours per week, the part-time reference and instruction librarian collaborates with the full-time reference and instruction librarians and other library staff to provide reference and research support and to complete defined projects related to LibGuides, collection analysis, archival processing, and other library priorities. This position is primarily focused on performing professional reference services, research appointments, classroom information literacy instruction, and librarian-level project work.

Minimum Qualifications 

• Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS/MLS) from an ALA-accredited institution or equivalent.
• Experience providing reference, research, or academic library services.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively search academic databases, catalogs, and other information resources.
• Strong research, interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently on assigned projects while collaborating effectively with librarians and other library staff.
• Ability and willingness to work regularly scheduled evening hours and provide occasional Saturday coverage.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience working in a community college, college, or university library.
• Experience providing reference and research assistance to undergraduate students.
• Experience developing or maintaining LibGuides or similar research guides.
• Experience with collection development, collection analysis, inventory, or weeding projects.
• Experience with archives, special collections, digitization, or institutional history projects.
• Experience providing library instruction.
• Experience with library assessment or data analysis.
• Familiarity with integrated library systems, discovery systems, and academic research databases.
• Experience supporting first-generation, nontraditional, and academically diverse student populations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide professional librarian-level reference and research support to students, faculty, staff, and other library users.
• Provide dedicated support for LibGuide development, archival work, collection analysis, assessment, and other defined library projects.
• Conduct Information Literacy instruction sessions.
• Work collaboratively with full-time librarians and library staff to identify research needs, strengthen collections and resources, and improve library services.
• Provide regular evening coverage and backup Saturday coverage.

 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ability to provide excellent reference and research services in all formats for students and faculty in an academic library.
• Demonstrated experience in the provision of library instruction or teaching experience at the college level.
• Experience creating web-based guides, instructional videos and tutorials.
• Ability to bring projects to satisfactory and timely completion.
• Experience using the following products/technologies: Microsoft Office, LibApps/LibGuides, the Alma/Primo discovery system, Canvas and Workday.
• A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success, as well as working with broadly diverse communities.
• Ability to work evenings and serve as backup Saturday coverage.

 

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods
• Frequent use of computers and office equipment
• Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds

Work Schedule:

• This is a part-time position working approximately 10 hours per week.
• The position provides evening coverage, generally two evenings per week.
• The position provides backup Saturday librarian coverage as needed.

Compensation:

• This is a part-time, hourly position paying $35/hour, generally 10 hours per week. The schedule may vary based on departmental needs.

Part-Time Faculty can attend a paid Orientation, receive paid professional development training, receive tuition reimbursement through Grant-in-Aid, and receive longevity payments based on years of service. Part-time Faculty are not eligible for health benefits unless they meet specific workload requirements per semester. Conditions of Employment

This is an on-going pool of qualified individuals interested in part-time, temporary non-tenure track instructional opportunities at Truckee Meadows Community College. These opportunities are part-time only and will not be continued beyond the ending date. These opportunities may be terminated at will, at any time, for any reason, without notice; the appointee has no appeal rights. Temporary assignments are not eligible for consideration for tenure as part of the assignment.
