Chief Technology Officer - Radiology

Overview

University Radiology is the largest privately-owned provider of subspecialty radiology and teleradiology services in NJ.  We are comprised of more than 200 Board Certified radiologists with advanced U.S.-based training and expertise in all modalities and subspecialty areas. In operation for more than 60 years, University Radiology staffs, manages and provides preliminary and final subspecialty interpretations and consultative support for hospitals, imaging centers and other medical facilities, and serves as the academic radiology faculty at Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Our physicians interpret over 2.1 million radiology procedures per year.

Responsibilities

University Radiology has an exciting opportunity for a Chief Technology Officer to join our C-suite and help shape the future of our technology across our private practice.  This is a strategic leadership role responsible for aligning technology, innovation, security, data and digital infrastructure with our clinical, operational and business priorities.

 

The Chief Technology Officer is a key member of our executive leadership team and will be accountable to the Board of Managers and physician leadership.  Working closely with physicians, administrators and operational leaders, the CTO will develop and execute a technology strategy that supports exceptional patient care, physician experience, practice growth and long-term success.

 

The CTO is responsible for the strategy, architecture, security, and day-to-day operation of every system that touches image acquisition, interpretation, reporting, and distribution — from PACS/RIS/VNA and AI diagnostic tools to network infrastructure, cybersecurity, and the end-user helpdesk.

 

Core Responsibilities:

Radiology Systems & Clinical Informatics

• Own the full radiology technology stack: PACS, RIS, VNA, dictation/speech recognition, reporting and critical results communication, worklist and peer-review tools, and referring-physician portals.
• Evaluate, select, and implement radiologist and technologist workflow tools that reduce click burden, improve turnaround time, and support subspecialty and multi-site worklist distribution.
• Lead system upgrades, migrations, and downtime/disaster-recovery planning for all clinical systems.

Artificial Intelligence & Innovation

• Build and govern the practice's AI strategy: triage/detection algorithms, reporting automation, and operational AI.
• Own AI vendor evaluation, clinical validation partnership with radiology leadership, integration into PACS/RIS workflow, and performance monitoring post-deployment.

Infrastructure, Security & Operations

• Design and maintain enterprise infrastructure: network, storage, compute, cloud strategy, and image storage/archival economics at scale.
• Own the cybersecurity program end-to-end: risk assessment, HIPAA/HITECH compliance, incident response, endpoint and network security, vendor security review, and cyber-insurance readiness.
• Establish and monitor uptime, performance, and security KPIs; report risk posture and system health to the CEO and Board.

Strategy, Growth & M&A

• Serve as a core member of the executive team shaping overall practice strategy, with technology and informatics as a competitive differentiator; reporting to the Partners and Board of Managers
• Lead technology due diligence for acquisitions and partnerships: system compatibility assessment, integration cost/timeline modeling, and data migration planning.
• Design and execute post-merger IT integration playbooks to bring acquired sites onto a common technology platform with minimal clinical disruption.

Financial & Vendor Management

• Own the IT and informatics capital and operating budgets, including forecasting for growth, technology refresh cycles, and M&A integration costs.
• Negotiate and manage all technology vendor and licensing contracts (PACS/RIS, AI, cloud, security, telecom, hardware), driving cost efficiency and favorable terms.

Workflow Automation & Efficiency

• Partner with radiology and operations leadership to continuously improve technologist and radiologist workflow, throughput, and satisfaction.
• Establish a structured intake and prioritization process for informatics/automation requests from clinical and operational stakeholders.
• Establish an enterprise data and analytics strategy integrating clinical, operational, financial, referral, scheduling, and productivity data.

Team Leadership

• Build, lead, and develop all informatics teams, including hiring, design, and performance management.
• Be a collaborative member of the C-suite, who is accountable to Radiologist leadership and the Board of Managers

Qualifications

• 10+ years of progressive Informatics leadership experience, including 5+ years in a senior IT role
• Deep hands-on experience with radiology-specific systems: PACS, RIS, VNA, and DICOM/HL7 interoperability (healthcare, radiology, or diagnostic imaging setting preferred).
• Demonstrated experience owning enterprise cybersecurity programs in a HIPAA-regulated environment.
• Experience managing IT budgets, capital planning, and vendor/contract negotiation at an enterprise scale.
• Prior experience in a radiology practice, imaging center network, teleradiology group, or diagnostic services company, preferred. Private practice experience preferred.
• Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, healthcare administration, or related field; MBA or MS preferred.
• Relevant certifications (e.g., CHCIO, CISSP, PMP) a plus.

Pay Range:

 

Total compensation starting at $425K, commensurate with experience.
