The R&D Global Analytical Development Team supports innovation and development of new over-the-counter products globally. This important work includes physical and chemical assessment of new products, with a focus on generating robust analytical data to support formulation development and product performance. 

As an Analytical Chemistry Co-Op, you will contribute to the evaluation of novel topical and nasal drug products through advanced analytical techniques used throughout the pharmaceutical industry. Students may be assigned to projects focused on rheological characterization of formulations or in vitro release testing (IVRT) supported by liquid chromatography. These techniques play an important role in understanding product performance and supporting the development of safe and effective medicines throughout the product lifecycle. 

Rheology, IVRT, and liquid chromatography are widely utilized across the pharmaceutical industry to characterize drug products, understand product behavior and performance, and support regulatory and quality requirements. Through hands-on laboratory experience, you will work alongside scientists to generate meaningful data that supports the development of consumer healthcare products from early-stage development through commercialization. 

Key Responsibilities 

• Handle and analyze semi-solid and solution-based drug products using standard pharmaceutical practices. 

• Learn and operate specialized analytical instrumentation, which may include rheological, Franz diffusion cell (IVRT), and liquid chromatography systems. 

• Utilize software tools to characterize formulation properties and analyze experimental data. 

• Execute laboratory testing to assess physical properties, drug release, and other critical product attributes. 

• Perform basic statistical analyses to evaluate formulation performance and support data interpretation. 

• Execute standard laboratory procedures and sample preparation techniques for analytical testing. 

• Interpret and implement regulatory guidance related to analytical characterization of consumer healthcare products. 

• Generate, critically analyze, and document data using electronic laboratory notebook practices. 

• Prepare reports, presentations, and conclusions to communicate scientific findings. 

• Collaborate with scientists to support method development, evaluation, and validation activities. 

Qualifications and Skills 

Essential 

• Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences majors are preferred; other scientific disciplines may be considered if candidates have completed coursework in Analytical Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Spectroscopy, or related laboratory-based sciences. 

• Candidates should be available to work for the entirety of calendar year and be graduating between December 2027 and May 2028. 

Preferred 

• Creative, curious, and able to independently solve problems. 

• Strong prioritization and analytical skills. 

• Personal accountability and a desire to learn while making a meaningful impact. 

• Experience working effectively and efficiently with others. 

• A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater is preferred. 

 

Eligibility and Program Requirements: 

• This internship requires working at the designated location. Candidates requiring relocation are responsible for arranging and funding their own housing, transportation, and relocation needs. 

• Candidate must be able to work full-time (40 hours/ week) Monday-Friday ~8am-5pm for 6 months.  

• Candidate must be authorized to work in the United States and will not require sponsorship in the future. Work authorization documentation will be required during the application process. 

• The position is based in Richmond, requiring an in-office presence of 4-5 days per week 

Expected Start Date: Jan. 2027, possible 6-month extension   

Compensation for this internship is based on academic standing and degree program: 

• Freshman: $20.00/hour 

• Sophomore: $22.50/hour 

• Junior: $24.50/hour 

• Senior: $26.00/hour 

• Master's Student (Non-Engineering): $28.00/hour 

• Master's Student (Engineering): $30.00/hour 

 

Note: Multiple co-op opportunities are available within the Analytical Development team. Students may be assigned to projects supporting rheological characterization, in vitro release testing (IVRT), liquid chromatography, or related analytical technologies based on business needs and project availability.
