Company Overview
Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most. At Joby, we've been working to make that dream a reality since 2009 and we're now in the final stages of certifying our aircraft with the FAA. With plans to launch our aircraft in the US and Dubai, we're now scaling manufacturing and preparing for the launch of our commercial service.
Overview
Joby Aviation is seeking a skilled Quality Engineering Technician, Dimensional to support advanced metrology and dimensional inspection operations across our manufacturing facilities. Reporting to Quality Control / Quality Engineering leadership, this role bridges hands-on shop-floor inspection with quality engineering analysis utilizing 3D measurement devices, metrology software, and precision tools to ensure complex parts, tooling, and assemblies conform to tight engineering specifications.
This role serves as a key technical resource, designing measurement programs, supporting R&D trials, executing Measurement System Analysis (MSA), and qualifying inspectors on routine measurement routines.
Responsibilities
- 3D Metrology Execution: Perform complex inspections of parts, tooling, and assemblies using 3D measurement devices (CMM, Laser Tracker, Romer Arm) as well as conventional hand inspection equipment (calipers, height gauges, micrometers)
- Software Programming: Design, create, and maintain measurement programs utilizing PolyWorks software
- Inspector Training: Train Quality Control Inspectors on routine measurement setups, program execution, and fixture alignments
- Data Analysis & Reporting: Review, analyze, and communicate inspection data outputs and dimensional reports to Quality and Manufacturing Engineering teams
- R&D & Engineering Support: Execute R&D-level inspections, trials, and Measurement System Analysis (MSA) in close collaboration with engineering teams
- GD&T & Blueprint Review: Review mechanical engineering drawings and CAD models to provide feedback on Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) for inspectability and compliance
- Tooling & Process Improvement: Drive dimensional accuracy through tooling maintenance, calibration verification, continuous improvement (5S/Kaizen), and fixture optimization
- First Article Inspection: Conduct and generate First Article Inspection Reports (FAIRs) in compliance with SAE AS9102 requirements
- Nonconformance Reporting: Document, segregate, and relay nonconformance data through shop-floor Material Review Board (MRB) systems
Required
- High School Diploma or GED with a minimum of 2+ years of hands-on experience in a quality or metrology role utilizing 3D measurement devices
- Demonstrated experience operating precision inspection tools and gauges (surface plates, thread gauges, height gauges, micrometers, calipers, impression molds)
- Fundamental understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and mechanical drawing interpretation
- Strong computer proficiency and comfort adapting to modern metrology software and enterprise manufacturing databases (MES/ERP)
- Clear understanding of metrology principles (accuracy vs. precision, error recognition, and calibration/product traceability)
- Ability to identify inspection errors, initiate corrective actions, and document nonconformances clearly
Desired
- Proficiency or expertise with PolyWorks software
- Hands-on proficiency operating Laser Trackers, Romer/FARO Arms, or Bridge CMMs
- Deep knowledge of complex GD&T principles per ASME Y14.5M
- Experience executing SAE AS9102 First Article Inspections in an aerospace or advanced hardware environment
- Familiarity with basic statistical techniques (plotting data, SPC, identifying out-of-control conditions, measurement conversions, degree/minute/second calculations)
- ASQ Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) or Certified Quality Technician (CQT) designation
- Prior experience in tooling setup, fixture alignment, and aerospace/FAA regulated manufacturing
