Base Salary HEO7 - 8 $117,133 - $147,858 + 17% superannuation
About the opportunity
The ARC Industry Transformation Research Hub on Robotic Inspection and Asset Management (ARIAM Hub) is a collaboration between leading academic researchers and experts from the Australian robotics industry supported by the Australian Research Council to deliver research excellence in robotics for asset management. ARIAM spans 3 leading Australian universities: The University of Sydney, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Australian National University (ANU). These projects will be part of a collaboration between the Australian Centre for Robotics (ACFR) at the University of Sydney, QUT’s Centre for Robotics and the Robust Decision-Making Lab at the ANU.
The University of Sydney is seeking a Senior Technical Officer to lead the technical development of ARIAM Hub’s Capability Demonstrator program. Based primarily in the ACFR, the successful candidate will collaborate closely with academics, research and professional staff, PhD students, and industry partners to build an integrated field robotics facility. This facility will be used to test research outcomes and demonstrate real-world deployments of robotic systems.
This role is offered across HEO7 and HEO8. At HEO7, you will have demonstrated experience working with robotics systems, software development, and project delivery, contributing to the development, testing and deployment of robotic and mechatronic systems while supporting the Capability Demonstrator program. At HEO8, you will bring deeper technical expertise, operate with a high degree of independence, and take a lead role in the technical development and delivery of the Capability Demonstrator program.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
plan and execute fieldwork to collect sensor data (such as vision, laser, or acoustic data) from maritime and terrestrial infrastructure, processing this data to develop digital twin models of assets, and preparing reports on demonstration outcomes
provide essential project management support and expert advice to both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring the successful execution of our Capability Demonstrator program
manage and coordinate multiple projects, ensuring timely and accurate reporting on milestones, deliverables, and governance
maintain compliance with Workplace Health & Safety (WH&S) standards and offering strategic guidance to drive project success.
About you
tertiary qualifications in Electrical/Mechatronic Engineering, Computer Science or similar
experience working with robotics systems including development, design and debugging of electronic, software and mechanical hardware systems
experience in leading multiple projects and the ability to proactively seek stakeholder engagement to ensure project success
skills in software development including work with the Robot Operating System (ROS), and one or more of C/C++, Python, embedded systems, navigation systems, computer vision systems, web and/or user interface design
capacity to maintain and deploy advanced robotic and/or mechatronic systems
demonstrated skills and experience necessary to manage the processes for testing and support of software/hardware for robotic systems
experience managing large volumes of data for use in academic publications
the ability to liaise effectively with both scientific/technical and non-technical colleagues as well as the ability to write technical documents, project management schedules and reports as well as user manuals relating to software and processes.
