Acknowledgement of Country

The University of Queensland (UQ) acknowledges the Traditional Owners and their custodianship of the lands on which UQ operates. We pay our respects to their Ancestors and their descendants, who continue cultural and spiritual connections to Country. We recognise their valuable contributions to Australian and global society.

About This Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity to join Professor James Ward and the team at the Poche Centre for Indigenous Health as part of a landmark ARC Laureate Program exploring Indigenous urban health. Working within a collaborative and community-led research environment, you will help deliver a program of research that creates meaningful change for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in Australian cities.

We're looking for a passionate and community-minded researcher who is driven by making a real difference. You will be a relationship builder who can work respectfully across community, academic, government and industry settings, with a genuine commitment to conducting research with and for First Nations communities.

This is a unique opportunity to contribute to impactful research, grow your leadership and supervision experience, and help shape research that informs policy, practice and positive social change.

About This Opportunity

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Research: Develop an independent and collaborative research program across priority areas related to the health and well-being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples living in cities including cultural identity, visibility, pride, and belonging; access to services and opportunities for economic participation and empowerment; Indigenous knowledges in urban planning and sustainability; and culturally appropriate data systems and infrastructure.

  • Research translation and impact: Produce quality research outputs, contribute to or lead funding applications, and translate findings into accessible knowledge products, policy influence and practical outcomes for First Nations communities and other research users.

  • Supervision and Researcher Development: Contribute to the effective supervision and development of Honours and Higher Degree by Research students, including Indigenous HDR students, while facilitating engagement and capability-building opportunities.

  • Citizenship and Service: Build purposeful partnerships with First Nations communities, government, industry, professional bodies and the wider community, while contributing through mentoring, collaboration, internal service and active participation in priority activities.

This is a research focused position. Further information can be found by viewing UQ’s Criteria for Academic Performance.

About You

It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 (Qld). The position is therefore only open to Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people. The successful candidate will be required to provide evidence to confirm that they are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person.

  • Completion of a PhD in a relevant discipline, which may include public health, psychology, business, urban planning or another field that supports the objectives of the research program.

  • Knowledge of and experience in applying Indigenous research methodologies, and/or substantial experience working with and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

  • A developing research profile, including quality publications or other research outputs and experience presenting or sharing findings with academic, community or policy audiences.

  • Experience contributing to research funding applications and supporting the effective management and delivery of externally funded projects.

  • A developing record of supervising Honours or Higher Degree by Research students, with the capability and commitment to support Indigenous HDR students.
