Shrub Oak International School (SOIS) is a therapeutic day and residential school for autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex co-occurring conditions. Located in northern Westchester County, Shrub Oak offers unparalleled educational opportunities for autistic students in a family-centric, supportive environment. Our Clinical Practice Model:
Clinical Services at Shrub Oak International School operates within a fully integrated interdisciplinary model of care. While each clinician practices within the scope of their professional discipline, all clinical team members share responsibility for assessment, treatment planning, staff consultation, family partnership, crisis response, and quality improvement. We value collaboration, mutual respect, share clinical decision-making, and reflective practice, recognizing that meaningful student outcomes are achieved through the integration of diverse professional perspectives. Team members are expected to contribute their discipline-specific expertise while remaining open to learning from colleagues, sharing responsibility for student outcomes, and engaging in ongoing reflective practice.

Who You Are:
  • You have a passion for working with the autism population and believe meaningful change occurs through strong therapeutic relationships, individualized care, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
  • You are a thoughtful, relationship-centered licensed mental health clinician with experience supporting autistic children, adolescents, and young adults with complex behavioral, psychiatric, developmental, and social-emotional needs.
  • You utilize evidence-informed counseling approaches to help students build emotional regulation, coping skills, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.
  • You collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, including educators, clinicians, residential staff, behavioral specialists, medical providers, and families to support individualized student goals across school, residential, and community environments.
  • You are comfortable integrating therapeutic interventions across academic, residential, and campus life environments.
  • You utilize student-centered, strength-based approaches to counseling and treatment planning while embracing reflective practice, evidence-informed care, and continuous professional growth.
  • You remain calm, analytical, and solutions-focused when responding to challenging behaviors or crisis situations.
  • You demonstrate curiosity, compassion, clinical humility, sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion when working with students and confidential information.
  • You get the job done and are capable of strategic thinking while simultaneously rolling up your sleeves to lead and teach by example.
  • You have strong written communication skills, specifically involving documentation, progress notes, incident reports, and other related administrative tasks.
 
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Assessment & Treatment
  • Conduct comprehensive biopsychosocial, behavioral, and social-emotional assessments.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment goals, including ITEPs, FBAs, and BIPs as appropriate.
  • Provide individual, group, and family therapy using evidence-informed, trauma-informed interventions.
  • Collect and analyze clinical and behavioral data to guide treatment decisions and measure progress.
  • Provide clinical consultation across classroom, residential, and community settings.
  • Respond to behavioral and psychiatric crises and participate in TCIS interventions.
  • Maintain timely, accurate clinical documentation in accordance with organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.
Interdisciplinary Collaboration
  • Serve as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team.
  • Collaborate with education, residential, psychiatry, nursing, mental health, behavior analysis, occupational therapy, physical therapy, speech-language pathology, and families to coordinate care.
  • Participate in admissions, treatment planning, quarterly reviews, transition planning, and discharge planning.
  • Promote consistency of therapeutic and behavioral support across settings.

Family Partnership

  • Provide family therapy, caregiver support, and parent coaching.
  • Maintain regular communication with families to support collaboration, progress updates, visitation planning, and continuity of care.

Systems Consultation & Staff Development

  • Provide coaching, consultation, and modeling to education and residential staff.
  • Support implementation of behavior plans through staff training, observation, and ongoing consultation.
  • Recommend environmental and programmatic modifications to support student success.

Crisis Prevention & Clinical Risk Management

  • Develop proactive crisis prevention strategies and contribute to Individual Crisis Management Plans (ICMPs) and Recovery Zone planning.
  • Provide clinical consultation during behavioral crises and participate in post-crisis reviews.
  • Support safe, least restrictive interventions consistent with organizational policies and best practices.
Professional Responsibilities
  • Participate in reflective supervision, quality improvement initiatives, chart audits, and departmental meetings.
  • Provide supervision to interns or trainees as appropriate.
  • Maintain licensure, certifications, professional competencies, and required training.
  • Uphold ethical, relationship-centered practice, confidentiality, mandated reporting requirements, and organizational policies.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, accountability, innovation, and continuous learning.

Position Requirements:
  • Master's degree in counseling, Social Work, Creative Arts Therapy, Psychology, or other closely related behavioral health fields required.
  • Current New York State licensure in good standing as an LMHC, LCSW, LMSW, LCAT, or another approved clinical license required.
  • Minimum of three years of clinical experience providing assessment and psychotherapy services required.
  • Experience working with autistic individuals or individuals with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including clinical documentation and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Ability to manage challenging behaviors and respond effectively during crisis situations.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
  • Ability to get TCIS trained and complete/maintain all required training.
  • Due to the nature of work in supporting our students, all job description lists the physical requirements for that position
  • Our campus consists of some paved areas but primarily consists of grass, gravel paths and parking lots. Additionally, many areas of our building are fully accessible, however, as a historic building some areas are only accessible by stairs.
  • You must be able to ambulate around the campus, including hills, stairs, grass, and gravel.
  • Student Facing Positions:
    • Must be able to react and move quickly during student crisis, both for the safety of the student and for the staff.
    • Must be able to run across the campus and throughout the school to catch/monitor an eloping student, and/or to remove yourself from an unsafe situation.
    • You must be able to pass TCIS (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training for Schools).
      • You must be able to bend, stretch, sit, stand, crouch or kneel for sustained periods of time if implementing a hold.
