The Environment, Health, Hygiene and Safety (EHHS) Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining comprehensive health, safety, and environmental protection programs to ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and environmental stewardship across all organizational operations. This role serves as a strategic partner to operations leadership, driving a culture of safety excellence while ensuring adherence to all applicable regulations and industry best practices. The EHHS Specialist operates under the direct supervision and guidance of the EHHS Manager or Facilities Management leadership team.
Key Responsibilities
Policy & Procedure Creation
Develop comprehensive standard operating procedures (SOPs) covering all aspects of workplace health, safety, hygiene, and environmental protection
Create detailed workflow documentation including process maps, risk assessment matrices, and emergency response protocols
Establish governance frameworks with clear roles, responsibilities, and accountability structures across all organizational levels
Design quality control checkpoints and validation processes to ensure consistent program execution
Implement document control systems with version management, regular review cycles, and stakeholder approval processes
Regulatory Compliance & Standards Management
Ensure strict compliance with all applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT, NFPA, etc.)
Monitor and interpret evolving regulatory requirements and implement necessary program updates
Maintain comprehensive compliance documentation and prepare for regulatory inspections
Conduct systematic compliance audits and gap analyses
Develop and maintain permits, licenses, and regulatory reporting systems
Risk Assessment & Hazard Mitigation
Proactively identify and evaluate workplace hazards through regular safety inspections, job hazard analyses, and environmental monitoring
Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for new equipment, processes, and facility modifications
Develop and implement hazard control hierarchies (elimination, substitution, engineering controls, administrative controls, PPE)
Create and maintain risk registers with prioritized mitigation strategies
Implement preventive identification processes through predictive analytics and trend analysis
Incident Response & Investigation
Lead thorough incident investigations including detailed root cause analyses using systematic methodologies (5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA)
Develop and implement effective corrective and preventive action plans (CAPAs)
Create incident tracking systems with categorization protocols (severity, type, location, contributing factors)
Establish escalation matrices defining response timeframes, responsible parties, and communication requirements
Coordinate emergency response activities and manage crisis communications
Prepare incident reports and regulatory notifications as required
Required Qualifications
Education
Minimum: Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or related field
Preferred: Advanced degree (Master's) in Safety, Environmental, or related discipline
Experience
Required: 3-5 years of progressive experience in health, safety, and environmental management in industrial, commercial, or facilities settings
Industry Experience: 3+ years in facilities management, manufacturing, construction, or related field
Regulatory Experience: Working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and other applicable regulatory agencies
Audit Experience: Experience conducting internal safety audits and supporting external regulatory inspections
Incident Investigation: Proven track record conducting thorough incident investigations and root cause analyses
Professional Certifications (Preferred)
Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)
Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM)
Associate Safety Professional (ASP)
OSHA 30-Hour General Industry or Construction
First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor certification
Environmental certifications (RCRA, DOT Hazmat, etc.)
Technical Skills
Safety & Environmental Systems
Proficiency in safety management systems and incident tracking platforms
Experience with environmental compliance management software
Knowledge of industrial hygiene monitoring equipment and techniques
Familiarity with chemical inventory and SDS management systems
Competence with audit and inspection management tools
