Description

Energy Engineer
Location: This remote position is based in Houston, TX with regional and local travel as needed

ICF is a global consulting and technology services company with a mission to help clients solve complex challenges in energy, environment, and infrastructure. We combine deep domain expertise with cutting-edge analytics and digital solutions to deliver impactful results.

Ready to make a difference?

ICF is growing its energy program implementation team to support new and existing contracts in the region. Our clients include energy utilities, recognizable Fortune 500 corporations, and a variety of Federal, State, and local governmental agencies. We are seeking an Energy Engineer to support multiple energy efficiency programs in Texas and Louisiana.

The Energy Engineer will support the technical development and execution of energy efficiency and decarbonization projects for utility programs serving commercial properties, schools, data centers, government buildings, and industrial facilities. Working with guidance from senior engineering staff, this individual will apply analytical and interpersonal skills to complete defined engineering tasks, support customers and contractors, and contribute to high-quality client deliverables. The position combines independent execution of routine assignments with close collaboration on new or more complex work.

Why you would love working here:

  • Flexible work arrangements and strong work-life balance.
  • Investment in the community: Donation matching and volunteer opportunities.
  • Tuition reimbursement, 401(k) matching, Employee Stock Purchase Plan, and professional development support.
  • Mission-driven culture focused on sustainability, equity, and innovation.

What you will be doing:

  • Support engineering reviews of energy savings calculations for HVAC systems, building automation controls, lighting, motors, and process equipment.
  • Apply established program procedures and technical guidance when evaluating baselines for existing buildings and new construction.
  • Assist with preparation and review of measurement and verification plans and supporting documentation for energy savings verification.
  • Provide factual technical information to contractors and customers regarding program requirements for energy modeling and energy calculations, escalating non-routine questions to senior staff.
  • Support feasibility assessments for new energy efficiency measures and emerging technologies, including research, data collection, calculations, and documentation for pilot studies or potential deemed savings methodologies.
  • Develop and review spreadsheet-based calculations and, with guidance, regression models for new and existing technologies.
  • Conduct on-site energy assessments and analyze commercial and industrial building energy performance to identify potential cost-effective energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Document site conditions, equipment characteristics, operating assumptions, savings inputs, and recommended next steps in organized project files and client-ready work products.
  • Communicate with building managers, customers, contractors, and internal team members to gather information and support implementation of energy efficiency upgrades.
  • Coordinate assigned tasks with team members and clients to support program participation, schedules, and deliverable quality.
  • Travel requirements: Up to 30% local and regional travel for site visits and client meetings. Mileage reimbursement provided.

What we need you to have (minimum qualifications):

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Chemical, Electrical, Energy, Environmental, or Renewable/Sustainable Engineering (or applicants can substitute one year of related experience for one year of education)
  • 2+ years of professional experience in energy efficiency engineering, building systems, utility program, ESCO, facility engineering, and/or related experience
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and successfully pass a Motor Vehicle Records (MVR) check

What we would like you to have (preferred skills):

  • Engineer-in-Training certification, Certified Energy Manager certification, or interest in pursuing a relevant professional credential.
  • Experience analyzing utility interval (AMI) data, regression modeling, and energy savings calculations.
  • Experience with energy modeling tools such as TRACE 700/3D, eQuest, Carrier HAP, EnergyPlus, or OpenStudio.
  • Knowledge of building energy codes and green building standards, including IECC, LEED, and WELL.
  • Familiarity with the Texas Technical Resource Manual (TRM) and deemed savings methodologies.
  • Familiarity with utility energy efficiency programs, including Evaluation, Measurement & Verification activities using IPMVP and/or ASHRAE Guideline 14.
  • Working knowledge of one or more of the following: lighting systems, motors, HVAC systems, building automation systems, or industrial processes.
  • Experience preparing or reviewing engineering calculations, technical documentation, or data analyses.
  • Experience conducting or supporting energy audits using ASHRAE 211 standards.
  • Experience evaluating energy efficiency projects within utility incentive programs and/or data center environments.
  • Ability to identify issues, evaluate options, and develop recommendations within established procedures and with senior technical guidance.

Professional skills you will use:

  • Clear written and verbal communication and effective collaboration with internal teams, clients, customers, contractors, and vendors.
  • Analytical problem-solving and sound judgment within defined procedures and practices.
  • Ability to work independently on routine assignments and seek guidance for new, non-routine, or complex work.
  • Sound business ethics and ability to handle confidential information.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, PowerPoint, Project, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to manage multiple assignments and changing priorities while maintaining schedule and work-product quality.
