Position Summary

PacBio is seeking a Director of Protein Biochemistry to lead protein engineering and single-molecule biochemistry efforts supporting the development and advancement of its long-read, single-molecule sequencing platforms. This individual will direct a five-person multidisciplinary team with expertise in protein biochemistry, protein engineering, single-molecule microscopy, biophysics, enzymology, and computational and statistical analysis.

The Director will provide scientific leadership and people management, integrating experimental and analytical approaches to advance proteins and biochemical systems for sequencing applications.

Responsibilities

• Direct protein engineering and single-molecule biochemistry research to develop and optimize proteins and biochemical systems for PacBio’s long-read, single-molecule sequencing platforms.
• Lead, mentor, and develop a five-person team spanning experimental, engineering, and computational disciplines.
• Establish scientific priorities, research plans, and milestones aligned with sequencing platform development goals.
• Guide protein biochemical characterization, single-molecule biophysical measurements, and enzymology studies to understand performance and inform engineering strategies.
• Integrate microscopy, biochemical measurements, and computational and statistical analyses to guide experimental design and research decisions.
• Collaborate with cross-functional partners to translate research findings into improvements in sequencing platform performance.
• Communicate research progress, technical challenges, and recommendations to scientific collaborators and leadership.

Required Qualifications

• PhD in biochemistry, biophysics, molecular biology, bioengineering, or a closely related discipline.
• At least 15 years of relevant industry experience.
• At least 10 years of management experience leading scientific or technical teams.
• Strong knowledge of protein and nucleic acid chemistry, structural biology, single-molecule biophysical analysis, genomic analysis, and next-generation sequencing technologies.
• Experience directing protein engineering and biochemical research programs.
• Ability to guide multidisciplinary teams and integrate experimental findings with quantitative analysis.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Experience

• Experience applying AI and/or machine learning methods as applied to protein engineering, biochemical research, or sequencing data analysis.
• Bioinformatics expertise relevant to genomic analysis and sequencing technologies.

Candidates must have current authorization to work in the United States without the need for present or future sponsorship.

Non-Field Based Employees are required to be onsite Monday-Thursday (Friday work from home). Depending on the role, some employees may be required to be 100% onsite.

Salary Range:

$195,900.00 - $293,900.00
