Community Work-Study Program

The Community Work-Study Program (CWS) provides federal financial aid eligible students the opportunity to work part-time at nonprofit organizations that serve the public interest.  

Goals of this program include:  

  • Developing interest in public service through employment with TAMIU and placement in local nonprofit, government, or community-based organizations.  
  • Applying skills and theories gained through coursework to solve problems and explore issues outside the classroom.  
  • Enhancing career competencies, such as critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and leadership.  
  • Articulating how experiences will shape personal, academic, and professional pursuits.  

Job Summary

The program intern will assist with nonprofit operations, administrative support, volunteer engagement, community outreach, and special projects. The intern will have the opportunity to work alongside staff in different areas of the organization while gaining hands-on experience in customer service, event support, marketing, and community-based initiatives. This position is ideal for a student who is willing to learn, take initiative, and contribute to Habitat’s mission of serving families throughout the Laredo-Webb County community.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with general administrative tasks, data entry, filing, and document preparation.
  • Support volunteer coordination, check-in, recordkeeping, and community outreach activities.
  • Assist with Habitat ReStore operations, including organizing merchandise, customer service, and inventory support.
  • Help with appropriate construction-site tasks, materials, clean-up, and volunteer support as assigned.
  • Assist with social media content, photos, flyers, promotions, and other marketing efforts.
  • Support special events, fundraising activities, and community initiatives.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, donors, and community partners.
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Enrolled at least half-time (6 credit hours per semester for undergraduates, 3 credit hours for graduates).  
  • Maintain a TAMIU overall GPA of 2.0 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.  
  • Must have a current and complete file with the Office of Financial Aid.  
  • Must demonstrate financial need by submitting a FAFSA application annually.  
  • Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible non-citizen with an alien registration number.  
  • Must meet all other requirements as stated in TAMIU’s Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy (SAPP).

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish

  • Comfortable working in both office and community-based or outdoor environments.
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and Canva.
  • Ability to provide professional and courteous customer service to staff, volunteers, donors, and community members.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and complete assigned tasks in a timely manner.

Other Requirements

  • Work schedules are created by the department based on departmental needs but ensure it does not conflict with class schedule.

  • Promptly complete all required training.

  • Input hours worked daily and submit time sheet biweekly.  

  • Some evening and weekend work may be required.

  • Reliable transportation.

  • Subject to funding and/or need.

Rate of Pay: $10.00/hour for up to 15 hours per week
