Dewberry's Fairfax, VA office is seeking a Structural Discipline Manager to join a team of more than 120 MEPS professionals locally who are focused on professional engineering services for clients in the Virginia, North Carolina, and Maryland area. This is an excellent career opportunity for an enthusiastic and talented individual to work with outstanding professionals on a wide variety of projects, including water and wastewater treatment plant structures; industrial, K-12 school, and higher education facilities; healthcare, office, and commercial buildings; structural evaluations; and civil/site structures.  

 

The successful candidate will be responsible for mentoring, training, growing, and leading a team of structural engineers and designers in the successful execution of the structural scope on projects.  A discipline manager also assists Project/Client Managers by providing engineering resources to complete projects on schedule and on budget.

Responsibilities

Supervisory responsibilities of a Discipline Manager include the following :

  • Growing, mentoring, developing, and organizing staff in a way to allow for career advancement, professional development, quality client service, and operational efficiencies to meet business operations and project goals.
  • Managing resources for the discipline area, including:
  • Project staff assignments and priorities
  • Delivery due dates for group commitments
  • Current and Projected Workload/Capacity for Discipline
  • Minimum annual evaluations for each direct report.
  • Taking a very active role in recruitment of staff in the discipline area, including networking, recruitment, interviewing and “deal closing”.
  • Work with the design team across multiple offices and multiple disciplines, including subconsultants, to generate detailed design documents for construction plans.
  • Providing Technical guidance and quality oversight of all project work for the discipline area.
  • Provide 'on-the-spot' technical advice and decisions.
  • Serve as Structural Engineer of Record for a variety of structures. 
  • Establishing/improving standards for the discipline area.
  • Adhering to the project design schedule and budget. Regularly review and provide project managers with updates on schedules and budgets (status of the design process, tasks to complete, current percentage complete, etc.).  Understand project scope and identify potential additional services.
  • Participating in business development activities, including collaborating with our team in the marketing of new projects, proposal preparation, and client relationship management. 
  • Simply put – Discipline Managers control all production resources and all commitments must come from Discipline Managers. Conversely – accountability for our deliverables comes from the Discipline Managers.

 

Required Skills & Required Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in Civil/Structural Engineering (preferred).
  • Accomplished (15+ years of experience) Licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) or ability to obtain licensure through reciprocity (example, through Comity) within the State in which the position is posted within six (6) months.
  • Must have experience in the design process, including the production of design deliverables through construction close-out
  • Candidate must have a good working knowledge of the International Building Code, state building codes, and other related structural codes and manuals.
  • Experience coordinating engineering work and interfacing with other disciplines and clients.
  • Familiarity with Revit and/or AutoCAD is preferred.
  • Experience using structural software such as RAM, RAM Elements, STAAD, Enercalc, TEDDS, or Tekla is preferred.
  • Proficiency in MS Office software.
  • Ability to work and thrive in a team environment.
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written and interpersonal skills
  • Experience in staff management/department management
  • Experience in the design of various structural systems
  • Experience with Design/Build projects is a plus.

 

The projected range for this position is ($158,000.00 - 204,000.00) annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
