Description

Specialized work involving various non-emergency calls for service in response to incidents and activities including, but not limited to, non-violent non-confrontational calls for service as well as conducting non-emergency/non-priority investigation calls.

Employees assigned to this classification must be able to act effectively without direct supervision and are expected to exercise discretion, caution, common sense, reasonable calmness, and self-control under adverse conditions while maintaining control of a particular situation or non-emergency call for service. Duties may involve other special assignments of similar complexity, including providing assistance to those who are unable to care for themselves. Work will be performed in uniform, on foot or in an automobile, and on any assigned shift.

Employees assigned to this classification report to the SCG & FST Supervisor and are responsible to the Patrol Operations Division Administrative Lieutenant, Patrol Operations Division Commander, Major of Operations, the Chief Deputy, and the Sheriff. Work in this classification is distinguished from higher classifications by the degree of independence involved. Routine assignments and special orders are received from supervisors who observe and review work methods and results through reports, personal contact, inspection, examination, discussions, and appropriate employee performance evaluations.
  • Investigate all complaints which are assigned or brought to his/her attention and report or take action in those cases under the limited authority as defined under the Alachua County Sheriff's Office Field Service Technician Program
  • Under no circumstances make public any information that may jeopardize the successful completion of an investigation or the apprehension of a perpetrator
  • Be thoroughly familiar with the boundaries of Alachua County in relation to neighboring counties and be familiar with the proper names and locations of all streets, avenues, terraces, roads, drives, places, courts, main thoroughfares, alleys, public buildings, hospitals, etc., in Alachua County
  • Be thoroughly familiar with criminal laws and keep up to date with all new changes in Florida State Statutes; also, be familiar with federal laws and county ordinances
  • Provide citizens with general information, etc., whenever possible
  • Provide rescue and first aid services during accidents, disasters, and other non-emergency situations as needed
  • Provide referral and follow-up services
  • Advise merchants and the general public regarding suitable crime prevention methods
  • Be available for service at all times while on duty either by radio or telephone
  • Write all reports as directed in agency policy and procedures
  • Complete and relinquish all reports prior to completing a work shift, unless authorized by a supervisor
  • Take into official custody property that has been lost, stolen, or abandoned in accordance with agency policy and procedures
  • Conduct investigations/interviews with victims and witnesses of criminal incidents (when the suspect is not on scene), traffic crashes, etc., either independently or as part of a coordinated effort with a deputy sheriff
  • Testify in court or give depositions as necessary
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational readiness of all assigned equipment
  • Provide parking enforcement, to include the issuance of parking citations and when appropriate, direct traffic at crash scenes or as otherwise needed

High School Diploma / GEDRequired
Preferred Major(s): Criminal Justice or other related field

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
  • Successfully complete the ACSO Field Training Field Service Technician (FTFST) requirements
  • Successfully complete the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Selective Traffic Enforcement Program for Civilians
  • Successfully complete the FDLE Parking Enforcement Specialist for Civilians
  • Successfully complete the FDLE Traffic Control Officer for Civilians
  • Two (2) or more years of customer service experience is preferred
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:
  • Current, valid Florida driver license
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be at least 21 years of age at time of employment
  • Must be a citizen of the United States
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Sit/stand for extended periods of time
  • See/hear at a normal range
  • Read, write, speak, and understand English fluently

  • Ability to apply modern law enforcement principles and procedures to solve practical problems and to deal effectively with sensitive issues during contact with the public
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; to comprehend and follow orders
  • Ability to obtain relevant and accurate information through interview, interrogation, and observation
  • Skilled in the use and care of law enforcement vehicles and other required law enforcement equipment
  • Ability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, and tactfully, and with respect for the rights of others
  • Maintain the physical condition needed to lift and carry equipment, care for injured persons, climb flights of stairs, walk, stand, sit/drive for long periods of time, endure exposure to extreme weather, and perform lifesaving procedures (CPR and Basic Life Support)
  • Maintain the mental alertness needed to observe activities and implement appropriate action
  • Ability to maintain emotional and psychological stability
  • Ability to remember names, faces, details of incidents, and physical surroundings
  • Working knowledge of current federal, state, and local laws as well as agency rules, regulations, policies, and procedures
  • Knowledge of inspection procedures, issued equipment, and safety procedures
  • Awareness of available agency and community resources
  • Knowledge of proper administrative procedures
  • Good knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and spelling
