Position Description

The Anoka County Attorney’s Office has an immediate opening for Assistant County Attorney who will perform various duties. This position will work within the Family Law Division of the Anoka County Attorney’s Office, which is responsible for providing legal and advisory services to Anoka County Child Support Services and representing Anoka County in family law cases to establish paternity and child support, and to effectively enforce and modify child support orders.  Attorneys in the Family Law Division specialize in child support, paternity, contempt, and other various support enforcement proceedings, and will handle post-hearing proceedings and appeals related to family law cases.  The highest volume of court appearances will be in District Court and the Expedited Process.

This is a full-time, exempt, hybrid position. Interviews will take place the week of August 17, 2026, for those selected to move forward in the hiring process. 

Pay & Benefits

Assistant County Attorney I:

Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 36.  $85,363 to $119,496 annually ($41.04 to $57.45 per hour). Offer to be commensurate with experience.

Assistant County Attorney II:

Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 38.  $98,176 to $137,384 annually ($47.20 to $66.05 per hour). The offer will be aligned with candidates who have at least two years of directly related experience.

Assistant County Attorney III:

Anoka County Salary Schedule Grade 40.  $117,790 to $164,840 annually ($56.63 to $79.25 per hour).  The offer will be aligned with candidates who have at least five years of directly related experience.

Work Location

  • This position is located at the Anoka County Government Center in Anoka.
  • Most work is conducted on site at the Anoka County Government Center and attached Courthouse.
  • Expected work hours are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Schedule may vary based on business needs and supervisory approval.
  • Occasional extra hours and evening hours are required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
These examples are not all inclusive and are intended to be illustrative of primary responsibilities of an Anoka County Assistant County Attorney.

  • Represent Anoka County in legal proceedings, including hearings, trials, and appeals.
  • Prepare briefs, motions, memoranda of law, opinions, pleadings, agreements, contracts, and other legal documents.
  • Conduct pretrial/prehearing preparations. Review various legal resources in support of legal
  • Research, analyze, and interpret existing laws, regulations, and cases.
  • Gather evidence, interview witnesses, and effectively present findings and arguments in state and federal court, or to other tribunals and finders of fact.
  • Confer with parties and the public and negotiate settlements.
  • Provide legal opinions and training to Anoka County employees and other government agencies in assigned subject matter.
  • Prepare post-hearing motions and appeals, render legal opinions, review motions and other legal documents, confer with and provide legal counsel to county departments, officials, and employees.
  • Draft ordinances, rules, and policies.
  • Work collaboratively and communicate effectively with assigned legal team which includes legal assistants, paralegals, investigators, and victim witness staff.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and/or mentoring to a subordinate group as assigned.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Graduate of an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in Minnesota (must be licensed by October 2026)
  • Successfully complete a fingerprint-based background investigation

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Needed

  • Experience representing a state, county, city, or other government entity
  • Completion of paid Court of Appeals, Federal or District Court Judicial Clerkship
  • Experience in effective presentation of cases to a court, arbitrator, referee, mediator, tribunal, or other finder of fact, including rules of court and evidence
  • Experience conducting legal research and data analysis
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to collaborate with clients, coworkers, and others
  • Using technology in everyday practice

Physical Demands and Work Conditions

  • Standard office environment, courtrooms, travel to various county work sites and meetings as needed
  • Work activities may require contact with uncooperative, angry, and sometimes hostile clients depending on assignment
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus, such as to work on computers. Ability to see colors, shades and brightness
  • Hearing abilities required for general and phone communication, signals, and machine sounds
  • Assignments are sedentary, occasionally alternating between sitting, standing, walking, crouching, and kneeling as required to perform job responsibilities
  • Frequent wrist and finger manipulation to complete computer work
  • Occasional lifting of 10-20 lbs.
  • Equipment used includes computers, phones, and standard office equipment
  • Travel between work sites may require driving a county vehicle and/or a personal vehicle
  • Additional physical/mental requirements that occur may not be listed above, but are inherent in
  • performing the position's essential functions
