Manager, Aviation Ops Safety and Training

Job Summary:

Oversees all safety programs, pilot training, and regulatory compliance for Part 133 utility helicopter operations, ensuring flight crews operate safely, efficiently, and in accordance with FAA regulations, company SOPs, and industry best practices. Drives a strong safety culture by standardizing training, managing operational risk, reinforcing compliance, and supporting mission readiness across all flight operations.

Job Description:

• Manages full regulatory compliance by maintaining and enhancing the Aviation Safety Management System (SMS), enforcing FAA Part 133/Part 91 requirements, and upholding all company safety policies and operational standards.

• Leads critical safety oversight by directing incident and accident investigations, preparing detailed safety reports, and implementing corrective actions, while also driving proactive risk mitigation through monitoring safety trends, coordinating audits and regulatory reviews, and developing preventative strategies and emergency‑readiness measures that strengthen operational safety, reduce future risk, and reinforce overall resilience.

• Oversees comprehensive pilot and crew training programs covering initial, recurrent, and mission‑specific requirements—while ensuring consistent execution and standardization of external‑load and longline operations.

• Ensures training excellence by managing qualification tracking, maintaining accurate training records, verifying instructor and evaluator compliance with regulatory standards, and cultivating strong partnerships with industry and regulatory stakeholders.

• Guides and develops high‑performing teams by managing resources, building capability, strengthening collaboration, and driving accountability through clear performance expectations, coaching, and continuous feedback.

• Advances departmental effectiveness by defining and monitoring KPIs, managing budgets, implementing operational strategies, and ensuring alignment with organizational priorities while overseeing expanded responsibilities that support long‑term operational resilience and improvement.

• Follows established company policies, procedures, and standards to ensure full compliance with applicable laws and industry regulations.

• Participates in storm restoration tasks and assigned drills to contribute to the safe and reliable recovery of services.

• Performs additional tasks aligned with role expectations and qualifications to support team goals and operational flexibility.

Additional Job Description:

Education

• FAA commercial pilot or airline transport pilot certificate.

Experience

• 7 years of experience in an aviation role, with at least 3 years overseeing employees directly, leading teams, budgets and projects in a supervisor role.

• Experience managing day-to-day operations, teams, defining work plans and achieving departmental objectives.

• Strong understanding of FAA regulations, SMS principles, and operational risk management.

• Minimum total flight hours helicopter 1,500

• Pilot in Command flight hours helicopter 500 

Preferred Experience

• A combination of aviation and utility/linework experience

• Experience in pilot training, instructional methods, or standardization.

• Experience in utility helicopter (Part 133 longline/external load) operations, if applicable.

• Experience with HEC (Human External Cargo) operations, if applicable.

• Familiarity with Luma specific aircraft types and mission profiles.

• Participation in industry safety programs or associations (USHST, HAI, etc.).

• It is crucial for the Aviation Operational Safety & Training Manager to be familiar with Web Based Analytical Tools, Knowledge of Safety Management Systems (SMS), and have the ability to manage and implement safety programs.
